DUXBUKY
HAMPTON. VA. - Mrs. Dorothy
Riddick Duxbury, 78, a native of
Newport News, Va. and the widow of
Cutis Page Duxbury, died Friday in a
hospital.
Mrs. Duxbury was a member of
Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs.
J. G. Wilson Jr. of Hampton; two
sons, William F. Alto Jr. of Tampa,
Fla. and David C. Duxbury of
Hampton; two sisters, Mrs. Charles
Robert Riddick of Hertford and Mrs.
Donald R. Swenson of Hampton; six
grandchildren and a great
grandchild.
Funeral services were held
Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Alder
sgate United Methodist Church,
Hampton, Va., by the Rev. Glenn G.
Williams. Burial followed in
Parklawn Memorial Park.

LISTER
WEEKSVILLE ? Mrs. Bertha
Sawyer Lister, 98, died Thursday,
January 12, in Albemarle Hospital.
A lifelong resident of the
Weeksville area, she was a member
of Salem Baptist Church. Survivors
include four daughters, Mrs. Lina
Belle Jennette of Elizabeth City,
Mrs. Ruth F. Lister of Hertford, Mrs.
Frances B. D'Auteuil of Norfolk, Va.,
and Mrts. Janice L. Burge of Baton
Rouge, La.; a son, Marvin Wiles
Lister Jr. of Elizabeth City, 14
grandchildren; and 11 great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Saturday at 3 p.m. in Twiford's
Memorial Chapel by Dr. Julius
Lambeth. Burial followed in Old
Hollywood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family
suggests contributions be made to
Salem Baptist Chruch of Union
United Methodist Church.
DUCEY
Mrs. Carolista "Carol" Cabell
Sandford Ducey, 95, of Route 2, Box
196-A, Edenton, died Tuesday af
ternoon, January 10, in her home
after a lengthy illness.
A native of Crewe, Virginia, she
was the widow of Capt. David
Francis Ducey (Navy Ret.) and the
daughter of the late James A. Sand
ford and Mary Elizabeth Wood
Sandford.
Mrs. Ducey graduated from St.
Mary's College in 1912 and was a
former member of Christ Episcopal
Church in Norfolk, Va.
Survivors include two daughters,
Mrs. Jane Winston Ducey of
Coronado, Calif, and Mrs. Billy
(Cabell) Pruden of Et. 2, Edenton; a
son, David F. Ducey Jr. of Silver
Springs, Md.; 13 grandchildren and
13 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held
Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Arlington
National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
with Swindell Funeral Home, Hert
ford, in charge of arrangements.
Donations may be made to the
Navy Relief Society, 801 N. Randolph
Street, Arlington, Va. 22203.
BENTON
DELAND, FLA. - Wallace Jarvis
Beton, 73, of 131 Wildwood Road,
Deland, Fla., died Saturday mor
ning, in West Volusia Memorial
Hospital in Deland.
A native of Perquimans County he
was the husband of Mrs. Grace
Corbitt Benton and the son of the late
George and Sallie Matthews Benton.
He was the retired owner-operator of
a Deland service station and was a
member of the Woodland United
Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters,
Mrs. Mary B. Godwin of Tifton, Ga.
and Mrs. Sandra B. Cole of Deland;
two sons, Joe Benton of Deland and
Albert Benton of Norfolk, Va.; three
sisters, Mrs. J. Elmer (Beulah)
Wood, Mrs. W. J. (Lucille) Saunders
and Mrs. Clyde L. (Beatrice)
Russell, all of Route 3, Hertford; a
brother, Edward Benton of Hertford;
nine grandchildren and four great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday
at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of the
Swindell Funeral Home with Rev.
Tom Supplee officiating. Burial will
follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
LOWE
Laura Mavin Manley Lowe of
Hertford died Monday, December 26
in Albemarle Hospital following a
short illness.
She was the daughter of the late
William Edwad Manley and Mary
Olive Manley and the wife of Isaac
Wood Lowe.
She was a member of First Baptist
Church, where she served as a
Sunday School teacher and a
member of the Trustee Board.
She was a former teacher with the
Perquimans and Chowan County
Schools, a Charter and life member
of the NAACP, a Board Member of
the Albemarle Mental Health Center,
as well as many other associations.
Besiders her husband she is sur
vived by one brother and many other
relatives.
Funeral services were held
Saturday, December 31, at 1:00 p.m.
at St. Paul A. M. E. Zion Church in
Hertford with burial following in
Roadside Cemetery. Lowe's Funeral
Home was in charge of
arrangements.
WINSLOW
HOBBSVILLE ? Maebelle Privott
Winstow, 82, of Rt.l, Box 296, Hobb
sville, died Sunday morning in
Norfolk General Hospital.
A native and lifelong resident of
Chowan County, she was the
daughter of the late Robert N. and
Nannie Belle Byrum Privott. Her
husband was the late Kenneth Ray
Winslow.
She was a member of Warwick
Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter,
Margaret W. Eure of Gatesville; one
son, Robert R. Winslow of Chowan
County; one sister, Mrs. Cora P.
White of Edenton; one brother,
George Privott of Edenton; 10
grandchildren; and 11 great
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday at 2 o'clock at Warwick
Baptist Church with Rev. Joseph I.
Willis, pastor of Warwick Baptist
Church, and Rev. Lamar Moore
officiating. Burial followed in the
Winslow Family Cemetery.
The body was taken from Twiford's
Gates Chapel to Warwick Baptist
Church on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers donations can be
made to the Warwick Baptist Church
building fund or the American Heart
Association."
SAWYER
Jesse Anderson Sawyer, 95, of
Route 3, Box 352, Hertford, died
Friday morning in Albemarle
Hospital.
A native and lifelong resident of
Durants Neck, he was a retired
construction worker. He attended
New Hope United Methodist Church.
He was the son of the late Blake
and Mrs. Martha Harris Sawyer, and
the husband of Mrs. Myra Vann
Sawyer of the home.
Besides his wife, he is survived by
a daughter, Mrs. Nita S. Brown of
Sheridan, Ark.; three sons, Ralph H.
Sawyer of Belhaven, Jean Sawyer of
Little Rock, Ark., and Marshall B.
Sawyer of Newport News, Va.; nine
grandchildren; and several great
grandchildren.
Graveside services were held
Sunday at 2 p.m. in Mullen Cemetery
in New Hope by the Rev. Tom Sup
plee, pastor of New Hope United
Methodist Church..
Twiford's Memeorial Chapel was
in charge of arrangements.
BYRUM
TYNER ? Melvin Aline Byrum
Sr., 63, of Tyner, died Sunday, in Unit
C of Chowan Hospital.
A native of Chowan County he was
the husband of Kathleen Jordan
Byrum and the son of Mrs. Lillian
Copeland Byrum of Tyner and the
late Ellie Byrum. He was the retired
owner-opeator of M & R Service
Center in Tyner and was a retired
employee of Swindell Funeral Home.
Mr. Byrum was a member of
Center Hill Baptist Church where he
was a Deacon for 19 years and a
former Sunday School Director for 10
years; a member and past president
of Chowan Ruritan Club and a
charter member of Center Hill-Cross
Roads Fire Department.
Besides his wife and mother,
survivors include a daughter, Mrs.
Tim (Linda) White of Tyner; a son,
M. A1 Byrum Jr. of Elizabeth City;
two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Byrum of
Edenton and Miss Louise Byrum of
Tyner; three brothers, Bertram
Byrum of Edenton, E. D. Byrum of
Rt. 2, Hertford, and Joseph A. Byrum
of Rt. 1, Tyner; and four grand
children.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday, at 2:00 p.m. in the Center
Hill Baptist Church, Tyner, with Rev.
Robert Kelly and Rev. Donald
Wagner officiating. Burial was in
Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton.
Swindell Funeral Home was in
charge of arrangements.
County schools gain re-accredidation
The Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools, through its
Commission on Elementary Schools,
has awarded continuing ac
creditation to the Perquimans
County Schools by action taken
during the Association's 88th Annual
Meeting her December 11-14, 1983.
Through accreditation, school staff
and faculty members will benefit by
Man charged with manslaughter
ELIZABETH CITY ? A man
whose car rammed head-on into
another vehicle on U. S. Highway 17
about eight miles north of Elizabeth
City on Monday, January 9, killing a
passenger in that car, was charged
Friday with manslaughter.
Trooper C. H. Mims of the N. C.
Highway Patrol arrested Kenneth
Purnell Floyd, 33, of 1403 Herrington
Road about 3 p.m. Friday.
Floyd has been released on $2,000
bond.
Killed in the crash was Marie
Rountree, 53, of Perquimans County.
Five other local residents who were
in the car with her were also injured.
The incident occurred when Floyd,
driving a 1981 Cadillac south on
U. S. 17 near Jones Lumber Com
pany, attempted to pass two other
southbound vehicles and plowed
head-on into a 1980 Mercury driven
by John Thomas .Stallings of
Belvidere.

Phone Rep to Speak
On Wednesday, February 1, at 4:00 p.m. a representative
from Carolina Telephone Company will be at the Perquimans
County Senior Center. ,
The representative will conduct a question and answer
period regarding phone rates, rental phones and the future of
the telephone. The public is invited to attend.
Microwave Workshop
A microwave workshop on "Basic Microwave Tips and
Entertaining with your Microwave" will be held Wednesday,
January 25, at the Perquimans County Office Building.
Dr. Nadine Tope, Foods Specialist with the North Carolina
Agricultural Extension Service, North Carolina State Univer
sity in Raleigh will be presenting the workshop beginning at 10
a.m.
The class will be limited to 40 participants, so please call
426-7697 on or before January 20, or as soon as possible, to
register. There will be a registration fee of $2.00 to cover
workshop cost.
Ski Trip Slated
The Perquimans County Parks and Recreation Department
is sponsoring a ski trip to Lake Harmony, Pennsylvania on
March 3-5.
The cost of the trip is $110 per person. This includes bus
transportation, ski lift, ski rentals and room.
Tentative schedule:
Depart from the Recreation Department on Friday, March 3
at midnight. Arrive at Little Gap Ski Slope on Saturday morn
ing. Check into rooms and then have the remainder of the day
to ski. On Sunday March 5, ski until 3:00 p.m.
We will depart from Little Gap around 4:00 and arrive back
in Hertford around 1:00 a.m.
Call the Recreation Department for more information or to
reserve your seat. Deadline for money is February 15.
Nominations Sought
The Perquimans County Jaycees are taking nominations for
Outstanding Young Educators. To qualify, nominees must be
under 35 years of age and be a professional educator in Per
quimans County.

Puppet workshop
Nancy Renfro Studios, America's leading publihser and
manufacturer of puppetry media for use in schools and
libraries, will present a workshop entitled "Puppet Shows
Made Easy ! " for East Albemarle Regional Library on March *
26, at Knobbs Creek Park in Elizabeth City from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m.
