CHURCH * ? : - -v. ' | Sunday School lesson Turn to the Lord Isaiah Sl:l-T The lesson given for today i? timely in it'* application to the period of history in which we live. The alliances between governments of the world are evident as power hungry totalitarian nations push and expand to engulf other nations and other people. On the other hand, freedom loving nations band together under treaties and other obligations to one another in an effort to thwart thfe expansionist moves and hopefully secure their own liberty, but is it working? We need only to observe the ongoing struggle and we note that, in spite of all that is being done by the free world, the totalitarina menace we fear is not abated in a measurable degree. Atheistic communism is real in the world, and its principles are diametrically opposed to the Christian principles of morality. Their leaders assume for them selves the perogatives of God, so it becomes necessary for them to deny that God exists. If what Christian nations and freedom loving nations together are doing is not working, then the question to be asked is, "What should we do?" The lesson study for today will provide us a positive answer. First, a glance at the Scriptural background. At the time of this lesson there were two world powers, Assyria and Egypt, vying for control of the Middle East. The Palestine area was situated directly between the two, Assyria to the north and east, Egypt to the south and west. Israel had been divided into two kingdoms. The northern kingdom, whose capitol was Samaria, had already fallen and had been captured by Assyria. The southern kingdom of Judah, whose capitol was Jerusalem, was being threatened by the Assyrian power. The all important question for Judah was "What should she do?" Against the advise of the prophets, the usual procedure was to seek alliance with another foreign power, in this case Egypt. The prophets recognized that to trust in the might of a forein power was a rejection of God's will and God's help, an evidence of a lack of faith. God's promises made to their forefathers was all the security that they would ever need, as long as they lived in faith and obedience to their God. Teenagers bring such cheerfulness with their helpfulness to the elderly, that -they truly "light up their life". & SWINDELL FUNERAL HOME But, alas, they looked for aomething more visible and con crete, so they sent ambassadors to Egypt to seek help. Misplaced Trust Isaiah Jl: 1-1 These three verses of scripture gives the picture from God's view. The politicians of Judah were making plans and taking action without God's counsel, and putting their confidence in secular might. It was because Judah was taking this action in which God had no part that woe was pronounced upon her. This tells us something. Political leaders who pass bills in legislatures and make decisions without God's counsel may be putting their nation and its people in jeopardy with God. Judah made a fatal mistake, verses two and three tell about it. The Egyptians were mortal men and they, too, would fall with Judah. Could a pagan nation like Egypt supplant God in giving Judah protection? God's Will Protect His Own Isaiah 31:4,5 These verses speak of God's protective power and likens it to a lion which has killed a sheep and r A word from . . . Mt. Sinai Hollywood and television have given many the idea that there is only one life to live. We can stretch a technical point and make that true. Life begins on earth and goes on into eternity. However, there really is more than one life. My first life was lived in the counsel of the ungodly. (Ps. 1:1) Like others I drifted from one lifestyle to an other. (Ps. 1:4) I had some prosper ous times, yet little of it was an investment for the future. When Jesus found me I was destitute of all spiritual righteousness. He showed me that I could bury that wasted life before I did any further horm to myself and my family. Then he showed me how to be born again to a new life. A life blessed by absolute spiritual values and guaranteed prosperity. (Ps. 1:3) "Marvel not that I say unto you, ye must be born again." (John 3:7) If you need a life analysis or want to be born again visit with us at Mt. Sinai. Wednesday night 7:30, Sunday morning 10:00 and 11:00. Answer last week, (Acts 7:59) What did God change Jacob's NAME TO& George Wilmore, Pastor Mt. Sinai So. Baptist Church stands boldly to feed, even though many shepherds try to scare him away. Israel was God's chosen people under covnant protection that had been faithfully demonstrated many times in the past years. The political leaders should have known whence comes their strength and their salvation. It involves trusting the Lord and prayer. Christian people should also be conscious of this as we view the evils confronting the world today. God is greater than mighty armies and awesome fire power. The Only Salvation Isaiah 31:?,7 Mr. S, Edward Tesh, writing for Standard Publishing Co., has this to say about these verses, "Knowing the goodness of God towards those who put their trust in Him and the severity of God as opposed to evil, Isaiah sought to turn his people to the Lord. To Isaiah, all other gTpind wat ?inking ?and." Isaiah issued a call to repentance. To turn from idols and evil to God and a righteous life. God would forgive and restore them, he is a loving God and will forgive our iniquities if we turn to Him in repentance.
