Center calendar
Hertford Mayor Bill Cox
presented a proclamation
declaring February Heart
Month in Perquimans County
to Elizabeth Thach, County
Chairman of the Heart
Association and fund raising
drive. Anyone wishing to
make a donation to the Heart
Association is asked to
contact Mrs. Thach.
The following is a list of activities
being planned for next week at the
Senior Center located on Grubb St. in
Hertford.
February
9? Bible study class, 1-3.
10 ? Income tax assistance (Call
for an appointment). Blood pressures
checked for free, ?-12 k 2-5.
13 ? Crochet class, 1-4.
14 ? Friendship Club Meeting, 2:00
p.m.
IS? Bingo, 2-4.
16 ? District 1-B Meeting at
Knobbs Creek Recreation Center,
2:00 p.m. Bible study class, 1-3.

Gregory.
Exercise class for 50 and over will

The Perquimans County
Recreation Department and Senior
Center will be sponsoring a trip to
Atlantic City, New Jersey on April 6
?.
Tentative schedule:
April 6 (Friday) 12:00 midnight -
We will depart from the Senior
Center, 300 Grubb St., in Hertford.
April 7 (Saturday) - We will
arrive in Atlantic City around 8:30
a.m. You have the entire day to shop,
gamble, etc. We will depart for home
around 9:00 p.m.
April 8 (Sunday) ? We should
arrive back in Hertford around 6:30
a.m.
Cost for the trip will be $27 per
person. This trip is sure to be a sell
out so call the Center at 426-5404 to
reserve your seat.
Area obituaries
SIMONS
Annie E. Councill Simons, 79, a
native of Handson, Va. and a resident
of Winfall, died Saturday in a
hospital.
Mrs. Simons had retired as a
teacher and a principal. She was a
member of Bay Branch A. M. E Zion
Church in Belvidere, where she
played the piano and organ.
? She was a past president of the
Missonary Society of the Edenton
district.
Survivors include her husbnad,
presiding Elder H. S. Simons; a
daughter, - Sally Ann Howard of
Hampton, Va. : two sons, Dr. H.
Fred Simons of Coventry, Conn., and
William Simons of Winfall; a sister
Evora Newby of Elizabeth City; a
brother, Dr. Richard A. Councill of
Virginia Beach, Va; five grand
chilren; and four great
grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 1
p.m. Friday in Kadash A. M. E.
Zion Church, Edenton, by the Rev.
W. L. Wainwright. Burial will be in
the family cemetery, Winfall. Blair
Funeral Service of Edenton is in
charges.
BOONE
GREENVILLE ? Robert L.
(Jack) Boone, head football coach at
East Carolina University from 1952
through 1961, died Monday in a
Greenville Hospital.
Boone, 65, was born in Roanoke
Rapids and raised in Portsmouth,
Va. where he was an All-Tidewater
and all-state running back at Wilson
High School in 1937.
He was co-captain of the Wilson
footballl team and captain of the
baseball team. He then went on to
play football at Elon College. He was
named to the AU-Carolinas con
ference team for three years and was
named to the Little AU-American
team. He was elected to the Elon
Hall of Fame in 1972 and later named
to the East Carolina Sports Hall of
Fame.
Boone received his master's
degree in education from the
University of North Carolina.
In 1948 he moved to Greenville
where he coached baseball at East
Carolina. He also served as assistant
coach of the football team until 1952
when he became head coach; the
school was then known as East
Carolina Teachers College.
For the last three years Boone has
been the specialty teams coach for
Ed Emory, who was an all
conference player on Boone's 1959
East Carolina team.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce
Black Boone; a daughter Janet
Berry of Greenville; three sons, L.
Robert (Bobby) Boone and Thomas
R. Boone, both of Greenville, and Dr.
Jack Lee Boone of Hertford; and six
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11
a.m. Wednesday in Jarvis Memorial
United Methodist Church with Rev.
James H. Bailey officiating. Burial
followed in Pinewood Memorial
Park.

PHELPS
FAYETTEVILLE - Rev. Daniel
Earl Phelps Sr., 67, died Sunday at
Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in
Fayetteville. A native of Creswell, he
was the widower of Elsie Lee Phelps.
Survivors include four sons, Daniel
E. Phelps Jr. of Elizabeth City,
Andrew Phelps of Asheboro, David
Phelps of Hertford and Bradley
Phelps of Fayetteville; five
daughters, Mrs. Diane Davis, Mrs.
Faye Mann, Mrs. Estella Harrell and
Mrs. Shelley Thorne, all of Fayet
teville; two sisters, Mrs. Pauline
Deaton and Mrs. Molsey Phelps, both
of Portsmouth, Va.; 21 grandchildren
and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held
Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel
of Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in
Fayetteville. Burial was at 4:00 p.m.
Tuesday in Higland Park Cemetery
in Elizabeth City.
Jernigan-Warren Funeral Home in
Fayetteville was in charge of
arrangements.

Marine Cpl. John L. White, son of
Johnnie and Addie White of Route 3,
Hertford, has reported for duty with
the 1st Marine Brigade, Kaneohe
Bay, Hawaii.
Community Calendar
Quiz Bowl Scheduled
The local 1984 Quiz Bowl has been set for Thursday,
February 16, at 10:00 a.m. at Perquimans High School
Auditorium. The "Quiz Kids" of Perquimans County are
David Cain, Sonny Larabee, Chris Mansfield, Alice White and
alternates Tim Bryant, Scott Dizon, Jeanette Jennings and
Paul Merrit. These students will compete against four other
high school teams. The public is invited; come out and support
your local school.
District Advisory Council to Meet
A District Advisory Council Meeting will be held February
16, at 1:00 p.m., at the Perquimans County Board of Education
Building. 1
The speaker will be Mrs. Janice McKenzie Cole, a local
attorney.
Workshop Slated
A Seminole Indian Patchwork Workshop will be held on
Wednesday, February 29, at the Perquimans County Office
Building. This technique involves piecing fabric to make a (
design which can be used on home furnishings and garments.

Open House Set For Bookmobile
The new bookmobile purchased by the Pettigrew Regional
Library will be on display to the public on Friday, Feruary 17,
from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., at an open house sponsored by the Per
quimans County Library.
The public is encouraged to take this opportunity to view the <
many improved features which enhance the bookmobile ser
vices. Refreshments will be served and bookmobile workers
will be on hand to answer any questions.
Interested persons should contact Elizabeth Harris, chair
man of the Perquimans County committee, for further
information.
Jaycettes attend luncheon
Two delegates from the
Perquimans County Jaycettes at
tended the National President's
Luncheon at the Hyatt House in
Winston-Salem on January 28.
Guest of honor was Joan Harrison,
President of the United States Jaycee
Women.
Other guests included North
Carolina Jaycettes President
Marlene Scott of Jacksonville, Mayor
Wayne Corpening of Winston-Salem,
and Jaycettes from across the state.
Those attending from the
Perquimans County Chapter were
Patsy Miller and Kay Winslow.
The Jaycettes are a leadership
training organization for women
between the ages of 18 and 35. For
