Workshop Scheduled
A Seminole Indian Patchwork Workshop will be held on
Wednesday, February 29, at the Perquimans County Office
Building. This technique involves piecing fabric to make a
design which can be used on home furnishings and garments.

Bookmobile Holds Open House
The new bookmobile purchased by the Pettigrew Regional
Library will be on display to the public on Friday, Feruary 17,
from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., at an open house sponsored by the Per
quimans County Library.
The public is encouraged to take this opportunity to view the
many improved features which enhance the bookmobile ser
vices. Refreshments will be served and bookmobile workers
will be on hand to answer any questions.
Interested persons should contact Elizabeth Harris, chair
man of the Perquimans County committee, for further
information.
Exercise class Available
On Monday and Tuesday mornings from 10-11:00 a.m., at
the Senior Center, Mrs. Nancy Street instructs an exercise
class especially designed and coordinated for people 50 years
of age or older.
Registration fee is $8. The first class will begin February 20.

Basket Weaving Class Set
The Perquimans County Senior Center and COA will sponsor
a basket-weaving class beginning Tuesday, February 28 and
continuing for six weeks. Classes will be held at the Senior
Center located on Grubb St. in Hertford.
If you are 65 years of age or older, the class registration is
free. All others must pay a $15 registration fee. Individuals
are responsible for the cost of their supplies. The instructor
will be Mrs. Alverta Beadles. To register for the class, or for
more information, call the Center at 426-5404.
Seniors Host Trip
The Perquimans County Senior Center will be sponsoring a
trip to Atlantic City on the weekend of April 6-8. Cost for the
trip is $27 per person. This price includes your round-trip bus
transportation. Space is limited so call now to reserve your
seat, 426-5404.
Museum Features Tour
The Museum of the Albemarle will feature a guided tour of
its facility on Sunday, February 19, at 3:00 p.m.
Generally visitors at the Museum take self-guided tours,
however, the Museum will be scheduling guided tours
periodically in order to provide and indepth look into exhibits.

Association to Meet
The Inter-County Water Association will hold its annual
meeting on Monday, February 20, at 8:00 p.m. in the Inter
County Fire Department. All member are urged to attend.
Pancake Supper
There will be a Pancake Supper on Saturday, February 25,
at the Senior Center in Hertford. Tickets are $2.00 each and
may be purchased at the Recreation Department, Woodards
Pharmacy, FCX and C.D White and Son. Proceeds will
benefit the Perquimans County Parks and Recreation
Department.
Symphony to Perform
The North Carolina Symphony Chambei Orchestra and the
Edenton Choral Society will join forces on Thursday,
February 23, at 8 p.m. in Edenton's Swain Elementary School
Auditorium for a concert.
Tickets are $8.00 at the door, $7.00 in advance. Associate
Conductor James Ogle will lead the orchestra for this
performance.

Museum opens new exhibit
The Museum of the Albemarle is
proud to announce the opening of a
new exhibition, "Today's
Albemarle," on February 14. You are
invited to view the exhibition of
photgraphs of scenes and events
around the Albemarle as seen
through the lens of today's cameras.
A group of colorful photgraphs by
some of the outstanding
photographers of the area have been
assembled. Bill Winslow, Mary Crut
chfield, Janet Hill Spencer and
Parker Chesson show the skill and
talents of the modern camera artists.
The beauty and nostalgia of our area
are captured in strikingly beautiful
color photographs.
This exhibition compliments the
"Our Town" exhibition of prints
made from the glass plate negatives
taken by Elizabeth City's turn of the
century photographer, Mr. .William
H. Zoeller
The camera equipment and film
have changed greatly over the years,
but the skill of the photographers in
composition and lighting are as im
portant today as they were 100 years
ago.
These exhibitions will remain on
display through March 18. The
Museum of the Albemarle is open
Tuesday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to
5 p.m. and Sundays, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Admission is free and open to the
public.
Library sponsor eight-week course
Literature of the Sea is the topic of
an eight-week course co-sponsored
by the Pettigrew Regional Library,
the Duke Unviersity Office of Conti
nuing Education and the North
Carolina Public Library Directors
Association, with funding from the
North Carolina Humanities
Committee.
The seminar will be held in the
Washington County Library every
Tuesday night for eight weeks,
February 21 to April 10, from 7:00 to
9:00 p.m.
The instructor of the course, Anne
Russell is a poet, playwright, novelist
and journalist whose subject mater is
the North Carolina coast.
She holds a PhD in American
Studies and has taught English and
sociology at the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill and at
Wilmington.
Formerly entertainment editor of
the Raleigh News and Observer and
director of the arts for the City of
Raleigh, Anne Russell lives at
Wrightsville Beach with her husband
and four daughters.
Interested participants may call
the public library to register. There
is no charge for the course.
Included in the topics to be discuss
ed are: Romance of the sea, Sea
legends and ghost tales, A modern
adventure, Man in nature and the
nature of man, Fantastic voyage,
Sailor take warning, a study in
morality and a personal voyage.
Pre-retirement conference slated
The Retirement Systems Division
of the Department of State Treasurer
is conducting its Annual Spring Pre
Retirement Conferences for
members of the Teachers' and State
Employees' Retirement System and
the Local Governmental Employee's
Retirement System.
The conferences will be held in 18
locations, covering all geographical
areas of the State, with each con
ference lasting about two and one
half hours.
These conferences are designed to
assist teachers and State employees,
and local employees who are plann
ing to retire this year, and personnel
officers and persons who handle
retirement matters.
Actually, all members who are 60
years of age or older should find
these conferences to be very
beneficial since they are designed to
acquaint those in attendance with
procedures to be followed in the
retirement process.
Locally the conference will be held
on March 6, at College of The
Albemarle, Lecture Auditorium, B
Building, Room 202.
Class to be held
A class in Natural Family Plann
ing will be given at St. Elizabeth-St.
Catherine Church in Elizabeth City
at 6 p.m. on February 29.
The class will be conducted by
John and Kathleen Burkhardt, direc
tors of the Family Life Office,
Diocese of Raleigh.
Natural Family Planning is not the
same as the rhythm method, the
Burkhardts stress. Unlike rhythm
method which relies on pat fertility
information, NFP is based on fertili
ty signs of the present cycle.
In addition to having an effec
tiveness rating the same or better
than many artificial methods, NFP
brings a couple closer as this
becomes a "way of life," Mrs.
Burkhardt said.

Firemen's Assn. hosts Awards Banquet
The Albemarle Firemen's Associa
tion, on Tuesday, February 7, award
ed Chief Jimmy Harris of the Pro
vidence Fire Department the
"Outstanding Fireman of the Year
Award" for 1983.
Parker Newbern, President of the
Albemarle Firemen's Association
and member of the Hertford Fire
Department, presented the award to
Harris.
Also recognized was Leon Evans of
the Center Hill-Cross Roads Fire
Department. Evans was honored for
his work as Association Training
Officer.
