Raleigh finished step-brother *s colonization efforts With the death at sea in September, UB, of Humphrey Gilbert, the burden of English efforts at Amrican colonisation was taken up toy his half-brother Walter Ralegh. Allied to the West Country seafaring families Drake and BUbert, Walter Ralegh was born about 1554 at Hayes Barton in Devonshire. He ipent some time in university at Oxford before going to France in 1569 to assist the French Huguenots in their fight for religious freedom. Back in England, he entered the Middle Temple in 1575, ostensibly to study law, but more probably to make social contacts. Like many energetic Elizabethans, Ralegh combined scholarship with --adventure. His intellectual curiosity was boundless, and he became an , accomplished student in many fields. He was a poet as well, with some ? verses published as early as 1576. Adventure beckoned to the soldier 1 explorer, and Ralegh took part in Gilbert's 1578 colonization attempt, j as commander of the "Falcon." ; After the expedition failed, Ralegh J went back to military service for a j time. i As a captain of troops during the ! Irish wars, Ralegh went back to ; military service for a time. j As a captain of troops during the ; Irish wars, Ralegh displayed a < bravery tinged with recklessness. In December, 1581, he was sent to ' England with dispatches for the ; Queen's court. He was noticed by ; someone in power, and Ralegh ? capitalized on earlier contacts to become a courtier. The court of Queen Elizabeth was brilliant, one of the glories of English history. It was the route of advancement for the talented and amibitious, the conscientious and the greedy. Someone else noticed Ralegh, the Queen herself. He quickly became a royal favorite. Legend says Ralegh once pleased the Queen by gallantly spreading his bejeweled cloak over a mud puddle to allow the royal feet clean passage. It was also reported that a bout of the verbal sparring dear to Elizabethans produced a couplet, with Ralegh's "Fain would I climb, yet fear I to fall." Matched by Elizabeth's "If thy heart fail thee, climb not at all." Enjoying the royal favor, Ralegh climbed quickly. Both his person and 'his purse benefited from the Queen's eppointments and gifts. In April, 1582, the Queen appointed Ralegh captain of a foot compnay, but was so desirous of keeping him near her that she excused him from service in the field. He still kept the title, power and a revenue of the post, however. In April, 1583, the Queen granted Ralegh a number of manors, and some months later she leased him Durham House to be his London home. In 1584 she licensed him to export certain cloth and granted him a patent which guaranteed him an annual fee from every English vintner. Ralegh's sense of the adventure and renown to be won from New World exploration was now magnified by the promise of profit from colonizing ventures. Any colony producing wines and buying cloth might enrich him. Of all the honors and grants flowing from the Queen to Ralegh, the most significant was the patent which enabled him to possess and occupy barbarous lands. (Part 2 next week.) Nine factors guide "Peace of Mind" Have you ever wondered why some people seem to be more satisfied with life than others? People, though lacking in material things, that seem to have a wealth of joy in their daily Uvea? -*Point of View by: BILL NIXON f Perhaps these people have "peace of mind." A few years ago, the Sociology Department of Duke University did a study on the subject. Hundreds of people, both happy and unhappy, were studied. ' Nine factors were found to contribute to emotional and mental Stability. Let me share them with you. 1. The absence of suspicion and resentment. . 2. Living in the present and future. Much unhappiness stems from an unwholesome preoccupation with past mistakes and failures. S. Not wasting your time and energy fighting conditions you cannot change. 4. Cooperating with life, rather than against it. The ability to stand up for what you believe in and not running away from life's challenges. ' S. Forcing yourself to be outgoing with others rather than retreating within during periods of emotional (. Refusing to pity yourself or seek self- justification in easy alibis that make you appear "noble" to yourself and ethers. 7. Cultivating the old-fashioned virtues of love, honor, loyalty and thrift. ?l Not expecting too much at ywrself or too little. When there is a wide gap between the standards you set tor yourself and your actual achievement, unhappiness is ftaevttaMe. t. Finding yourself something Mggsr in which to beMeve than yow ?wn greatness. Seif -centered. egotistical, materialistic people score lowest of all in any test for measuring happiness. It's strange to note that none of the factors above include a . strong religious conviction. I find it very hard to believe a person can find true happiness without a belief in something stronger than the promises of this earth alone. -O ? Have you ever played the "What If" game? All of us at one time or another have wondered what things would be like "If." A reporter once asked George Benard Shaw to play the game shortly before his death. "Mr. Shaw," he asked, "you have visited with some of the most famous people in the world. You have known royalty, world-renowned authors, artists, teachers of the world and more. "If you could live your life over and be anybody you've known, or any person from history, who would you be?" "I would choose," replied Shaw, "to be the man George Bernard Shaw could have been, but never was." What an insight! The sad fact is that few people ever become all that they could have been. Though you may not always be able to control what others do to you. what happens to you, whert yOu were born, what physical Impairments you have, what others think or expect of you or how high your IQ is, you can control how well you use what you have. A perm's real limits are a negative outlook on life, exuses, wasting time, pettiness, feeling sorry for yourself, and b*d habits. The real "if1 In life ia "If you want to." People aren't always what they appear to be. Take television's Mr. T for instance. / Speaking abort the Chieago ghetto of Ids childhood: "They (old me I'd never make it because I'm black, because I came from Hfare, because I came (ma a broken home. m . . Letters to the Editor Editor, THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY I would vote for the bond if I was of age, but I am only 12 years old. I hope the high school does get built. Please vote "yes"! Sincerely, Scotty Newcomb 5th Grade Editor, THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY This letter is written to express the need for a new high school building because the old building is dangerous. We would really like for you to vote "yea" for the bond issue. The students in the 6th grade think it would be nice to have a new building for safety reasons. Voting for the bond issue is real important because the old school is a fire trap. If you have a fire in each corridor how would the students get out of the building, jump out the windows? No, because the new building will be built different. The new building will be just one story instead of two. So PLEASE VOTE YES for the new building. Sincerely yours, Jon Ward 6th Grade Editor, THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY The Perquimans County Rescue Squad would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have supported us. We would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Roberta Phillips for the oxygen equipment that she donated to the rescue squad in memory of her husband. Thanks to all. Thank you for supporting the arts and the public schools in our community and in others. Sincerely, The students of Perquimans County Deborah P. Coates ? High School Instructor Rebecca Spivey ? Elementary Instructor My View Applauding concerned local government groups By SUE ANDREW A few years ago we were treated to a get out the vote campaign slogan ? "Vote and the choice is yours ? don't vote and the choice is theirs." How true that slogan is. In recent years we have seen the formation of Political Action Committees to persuade legislators and voters to ascribe to their views. It appears that one little vote really doesn't make a difference anymore, but, take heart, each vote does count and always will if each of us will take the time to register to vote and then use that privilege and vote! We applaud the efforts of the Perquimans County Commissioners to have voter registration on Saturday, March 31 and Saturday, April 7, from S:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We hope that those people eligible to register will take this opportunity to register to vote. It is a very simple process and takes very little time. Use your privilege, many people in this world would, and have, died for the right to vote. TPMir PERQUIMANS WEEKLY Courthouse Square P.O.
