Service news * LEWIS I Staff Sgt. George A. Lewis, son of Jackie Lewis of 11) Cante berry Drive. Spring Lake. NC. has completed the tactical fire operations course at Fort Sill. Oklahoma. During the course, students were taught to aet up and operate tactical fire direction equipment and to perform troubleshooting procedures and maintenance. Lew is scheduled to serve with the Srd Battalion, 8th Field Artillery at Fort Bragg, NC. His wife, Bridget, is the daughter 1 of Worth W. and Delma A. Dale of Rural Route 1, Hertford, NC. The sergeant is a 1976 graduate of Perquimans High School, Hertford. BARCLIFF Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Curtis E. Barciiff, son of Edgar W. Barcliff of Route 2. Hertford, NC and Marie Perry of 203 E. Ehringhaus St., Elizabeth City, NC, is a crewmember aboard the Battleship USS Iowa, which was recently recom missioned in ceremonies at Ingalls Shipbuilding, Pascagoula, Miss. The present Iowa Is the fourth ship to be named for the mldwestem state. The first was retired in 1M>. The secood Iowa was commlasioaed is 1887 in 1M, it was ordered to blockade duty off Santiago de Cuba, where it set on fire and grounded three Spanish cruisers, a flagship and a destroyer. The third Iowa was canceled mid way through its construction and sold for scrap in 1823. The present. Iowa was first commissioned in February 1843 and took part in many important campaigns in the Pacific during World War II. It was retired from service in 1848 and recommissioned in August of 1851 to support United Nations forces in Korea. After the end of the Korean conflict, the ship returned to Norfolk, VA, for an overhaul. From 1854 to 1857 the Iowa made several Mediterrean cruises and was decommissioned in February 1958 and put in "mothballs" in Philadelphia, whe.e it stayed until September 1, 1882. The ship was towed to New Orleans for the first part of its current modernization. and wai moved to Paacagoula in January IKS for its completion.
