Next week's lesson will end our studies in the book, and beginning in May we will have a quarter's studies in the Old Testament: First and second Samuel, first and second Kings. The Source of Strife James 4:1-3 In last week's lesson, James I singled out the tongue as being the cause of strife among Christians. As he moves forward in his thinking, probing even deeper for the cause of strife among people, he concludes that lust is the underlying cause of "war and fightings" as noted in verse 1. The principle that James is calling our attention to is the conflict that rages within humans-he calls it a } war. The war which he speaks about is between the desires of the flesh and spritual morality. James is saying in the verses that lust is the driving force that causes people to dq things that they should not do, in order to satisfy their desires and gain whatever it is that tfcey believe will make them happy. He further says that we do not have what we want because we do not ask God, or if we do ask God, He will not honor our prayer because we ask for the wrong reason. Alienation From God James 4:4-6 In verses 1-3, James has established that their strife came because of their selfish desires. Submission to God James 4:7-10 Man has the choice of resisting God or of submitting to God's will. Walking the narrow road of a Christian life is not forced upon anyone, yet, I have not known anyone who walked this narrow road who did not at times have some struggle. James tells us that we can successfully live Christian lives by God's grace, through a submission of our lives to God. In fact, James sets forth something of a formula for it. He says to submit yourselves to God and resist the devil. Then he says to draw nigh to God and fie will draw nigh to you. Thirdly, he says to be humble. This translates to faith, obedience, prayer, righteous living. These are the fundamentals for Christian people who would be responsible to God. James makes no provision for short-cuts. Man Proposes, God Disposes James 4:13-17 In these verses James wisely sums up the attitude of one whose whole life is caught up in the concerns of this world. James implies that he orders his life and makes his plans as though he were in complete control and God had no part in it. Read these verses for the full story.
