CHURCH Sunday School lesson God'* People Demand a Dag - 1 Samuel 12:14-25 Fear the Lord, and serve Him in truth with all your heart: For consider how great things He hath done for you. (1 Samuel 12:24). The descendants of Abraham, through his sons Isaac and Jacob, became a chosen people unto God. God brought them out of bondage in Egypt to the foot of Mount Sinai and there he welded them into a nation and gave them the Ten Commandments which would bu the basis (or their relationship between themselves and between themselves and God. ' They were to be a priest nation, living under the covenant which God had made with them and be an "example" nation so that all the pagan nations might see the advantages of a nation who served the one true God. Jehovah. They were; therefore, a people with a mission: God their King would provide them with leaders from among themselves that would provide direct access to Him. Up to the point in today's lesson, God directly called and commissioned the leaders Israel was to have. God chose Moses first, and Moses' successor, Joshua. After Joshua's death, God raised up judges to lead Israel, and (or many years the Hebrew people lived under a system of judges. Samuel had judged the people for many years. In his old age he appointed his two sons to be judges over the people. When the two proved themselves unworthy of the position, the people asked Samuel to appoint a king over them instead. Read the detail! in Samuel, Chapter eight. God was displeased: He was their King. He knew that their request was a rejection of His rule over them; however, at the heart of the people's request for an earthly king was their desire to be "like all the nations" around them. As we study this quarter's lessons taken from 1 and 2 Samuel * 1 and 2 Kings, we get an insight into God's character. We see how God patiently works with His chosen people to get them to follow His devine will and Church news ? ' It is interesting that God allowed the people to have a king, even though it was a repudiation of His leadership of them, but He also issued a strong warning of what he expected of them. Samuel's Solemn Warning 1 Samuel 12:14-11 A study of the Old Testament will lead us eventually to certain focal points. Namely, that God is loving, merciful, patient and long-suffering as He deals with people, but He is, also, Truth and Justice. God is jealous in that He will not permit idolatry. So firm is He against it that one of the Ten Commandments expressly forbids the practice. Another focal point that we come to recognize is that God required of His people faith and obedience. The warning which Samuel delivered to the people was for both the individual and the nation. They were to fear, obey and serve God. If they did these things, all would be well. If they failed to do them, they would receive justice from God's hand. Samuel reinforced this warning from God with a practical demonstration. Since it was wheat harvest time, the period between May and mid-June, when there was usually no rain, God would send thunder and rain. This would be a practical demonstration and also that they would know that their ' wickedness was great in asking for "? an earthly king. J A Penitent People Reassured 1 Samuel 12: 1?- 25 J These verses tell of the response of v j the people to this practical i demonstration of God's justice. They ' repented of their evil and asked j Samuel to pray for them that God ** would not destroy them for their wickedness. Then Samuel gave them the assurance of God's forgiveness and mercy and a call for their future 4 obedience. "Turn not aside from following the Lord, but serve the ?
