LOCAL NEWS Hospital Nightingale service adds new helicopter Nightengale, the emergency air ambulance service provided by Medical Center Hospitals of Norfolk, Virginia, has a new Bocal BO 105 helicopter. With the capability of cruising at 145 mph, the aircraft can be at Chowan Hospital within 27 minutes of take-off. The new helicopter has increased safety features, which includes twin engines, a powerful search light, and high skid gear. Space and equipment capabilities of the BO 105 are greater than with the original Nightingale, ensuring the ability to easily transport and treat two patients during a single flight. Some of the additional internal space was created by an innovative feature of placing the oxygen tanks on the outside of the helicopter. The flight crew consists of the pilot, a flight nurse, and a paramedic. All three have undergone rigorous training to become a part of this team. Area physicians indicate that they have been most impressed with the expertise of these crew members. The request for transfer by Nightingale is initiated by the physician, when they feel the patient would benefit more greatly from air transport rather than the traditional ground method of transfer. Since the original Nightingale made its first flight to Chowan Hospital in August 1962, there have been seven accident patients and 13 medical patients to be transported by this air ambulance service. This service is an important one for the ?mailer, rual hospitals with patients who require more sophisticated , equipment and more intense care than available at the smaller facility. Thomas "Tommy" Hollowell, 73, a retired farmer and native of Chowan County, Local Briefs Sundeck provides therapy Have you ever been shut-in with an illness? Remember how good it felt when you could finally go out of doors again, and felt the sunshine and fresh air? Now patients at Albemarle Hospital can enjoy the benefits of fresh air and sunshine during their hospital stay. A deck just off the second floor's main corridor offers recovering patients a place to get away from the indoor confines of their room . Attractive, whether resistant white and yellow deck furniture and sun umbrellas have just been added to the deck. These were donated by the Hospital Volunteers. Second floor at Albemarle Hospital largely offers post operative care calls for patients to be up and moving around, usually by the first day after surgery. Many post operative patients can walk well enough to reach and enjoy the sun deck by the third day after surgery. Salads for all courses "Salads for all Courses" will be the topi0 of an area meeting and tasting tour sponsored by Perquimans County Extension Homemakers tonight, (Thursday, June 14) at 7:30 p.m. at the ARPDC (Albemarle Commission) Building. Five salads will be featured including appetizer, garniture, accompaniment, main course, and dessert salads. Participants will get to sample salads like Hawaiian Chicken Salad, Strawberry Salad, Carrot-Raisin Pineapple Salad and others. What could be more appealing and delightful than cool fresh salads for hot summer meals? Salads are excellent for any menu all through the year because they are nutritious, ^expensive, and quick and easy to prepare. They are especially good for spring and summer months for several reasons. ?Nutrients are at optimum quantity in fresh, raw vegetables available during these seasons. Nutritive value has not been sacrificed for processing or cooking. ?Certain fruits and vegetables for salad use are less expensive or available in the garden during these months. ?Salads that do not require cooking are best. Heat buildup is reduced when your range is not in use. ?Because they are quick and easy to prepare, you can have more time outside to enjoy the warmer weather. Deciding on meal menus is often the most difficult task of meal preparation. It is easy to become a creature of habit, preparing the same menus day in and day out, week in and week out. A variety of salad recipes can help you break this habit. Plan to attend the program "Salads for all Courses." ?
