IRS AUDITS
(How to Handle Them)
> A voluntary tax system such as
a ours uses the audit as a means of
? achieving compliance with tax laws.
Only a small percentage of the
. millions of returns that are filed are
* selected for audit. Using a complex
" scoring system, the IRS computers
make the initial selection. A review
of these returns by IRS personnel
determines which returns will
* actually be audited.
The most frequent audit is the
"correspondence audit" where the
IRS osks for clarification or docu
? mentation for some item on your
, return. The "office interview audit"
" requests that the taxpayer bring
. supporting documents to an IRS
office for review by an agent.
* A "field audit," usually used for
a business returns and more complex
' individual returns, is conducted on
the taxpayer's piemises.
Some basic rules to follow to get
* through ony audit as quickly and
? painlessly as possible include:
" 1. Be cooperative and business
like. Provide the information
requested promptly, but do
? not volunteer other inform
ation.
' 2. Remember the agent is just
doing his job. Don't harangue
him with your views on taxes,
and never offer him o "gift."
? 3. If your return was properly
prepored, don't be intimidated
into paying taxes that you do
' not owe. te reasonable, how
, ever: there may be points not
worth your time and money to
argue.
If the audit leaves some Issue*
| unsettled, you do have various
. rights of appeal. You may even
? take your case to court.
It is advisable to engage profes
" sionol assistance. You will feel
, more comfortable knowing that
? you have an expert an your side.
' and ony fees you pay wlH be de
ductible an a later tax return.
Bears can be dangerous. Even the Wall Street bear can
take a bite out of your financial future. But don't worry.
Buying U.S. Savings Bonds through the Payroll
Savings Plan will let you ignore any bear market
Bonds have a variable interest rate combined with a
guaranteed minimum of 7.5%, if you hold them 5 years
or more.
So you share in higher returns with
the bull, but cant lose
to the bear. That's
the best of both
markets. *
