LOCAL NEWS New diagnostic service offered at Chowan Hospital Chowan Hospital proudly announces the addition ->?f Nuclear Medicine, a new diagnostic service in the' hospital's Radiology. i department. Johnny Rryan, i Hospital Director, reported that the acquisition of this sophosticated equipment completes the current technological upgrading of the Radiology department, which began with the addition of diagnostic ultrasound equipment almost two years ago. He stated, "The availability oi nuclear scans is a tremendous convenience for the patients, as it eliminates the necessity of travel to other facilities to have these studies performed." A special camera, called a scintillation camera, went into operation June 22, and was crisined "liable" after its first patient Mrs. Mable Wiggins of Hobbsville. It is designed to detect extremely small amounts of* radiation tnd will produce pictures of organs and blooc vessels which have been selectively "targeted" by tracer doseeof radioactive substances. A nutlear camera is commonly used tor creating images of the liver, lungs, brain, bones, and other organs and is useful in finding Infections, cancer, blood clots, strokes, and other diseases. According to Dr. Marvin Baker, chairman of the Radiology department, the new gamma camera has a very sophisticated computer which allows the instrument to be used in evaluating patients (or possible heart disease and certain diseases of the blood vessels, giving Chowan Hospital more advanced capabilities than are available on many older gamma cameras. The output of blood by the heart can be evaluated, as well as motion by the walls of the heart. Blockage of the coronary arteries (the small arteries which nourish the heart) can be evaluated by this method. These "tracer" doses of radioactive material usually have short physical and biological "hall-lives." That is, most of the substance will have left the body in a short time, minimising the radiation received by the patient. Since the patient's "targeted" organ itself gives off the gamma rays that produce the picture of that organ, the examination differs from an x-ray picture which is made by having x-rays pass through the patient's body. Bryan indicated that the instrument represents "state of the art" technology. Bryan and Baker announced that Emmert Area obituaries WHITE William Edward White. 85, of 205 MURFREESBORO. N. C. ? W. Fund approval is pending until the General Assembly meets to set their budget for the upcoming fiscal year. Halstead explained that the county's allotment was determined by a percentage of total monies available for state wide road improvements. "The D. 0. T. determines the total number of unpaved roads in the state and then determines the total mileage of unpaved roads in the county to determine a county's percentage of available funds," Halstead said. Studies are conducted on the secondary roads to determine top priority projects, with points given for the number of homes and churches located on the road, school bus travel on the road, and daily traffic counts. "The state takes the results of the road studies, totals the number of points per road, compares the road to others in the county, and names the road serving the largest number of people the top priority road," Halstead said. "Property owners along the road are asked to dedicate the right-of-way to the state for these roads, and if right-of-way is not reeived the state moves on the second priority road," he added. This years program called for State Road 1300, the Charlie Griffin Road, as priority number one, and State Road 1311, Whitehat Road, as priority number two; neither of these roads are scheduled for upgrading due to difficulties in obtaining right-of-ways.
