Local Students to Attend North
?<
Carolina School of Science
and Mathematics
The North Carolina School of
Science and Mathematica was
created to provide a rigorous,
comprehenaive education for
academically gifted secondary
students and to demonstrate that
it ia feasible and rewarding to
offer such a program.
For decades American
education had neglected that
small percentage of students
from which the nation's leaders
often emerge. Young scientists,
mathematicians, and other
outstanding young scholars were
not being identified or
challenged.
NCSSM was charged with that
task by the North Carolina
General Assembly and Governor
James B. Hunt, Jr. in 1978.
The school was asked to
identify academically gifted
students from varied
backgrounds and to design and
deliver appropriate academic
and residential opportunities and
resources for the state's other
students, many of whom are
gifted and talented, as well as
teachers.
NCSSM seeks the means to
serve learners and teachers
statewide and to discover
effective methods of evaluation
and research. Sharing those
findings was a third and equally
important charge.
During its first three years of
operation, the school has
developed a bias-free admissions
policy and school environment, a
comprehensive curriculum, a
nurturing residential
atmosphere, a pertinent co
curricular program,
opportunities for independent
study, and community and
campus service programs ? all
contributing to a climate for
excellence.
