LOCAL NEWS Area obituaries RONALD W. ROGERSON VIRGINIA BEACH. VA. ? Funeral services for Ronald Webb Rogerson, 33. or Guam Street, who died Wednesday, August 15, in his home, were held Saturday in Cedarwood Cemetery, Hertford, by Dr. John Allen. Williford-Barham Fumeral Home, Edenton, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Ronald W. Rogerson Memorial Fund, care of Charles Caldwell, Principal, Kempsville High School, Virginia Beach, Va. 23464. An English teacher at Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach, he was a native of Pasquotank County and a son of J. Prestons Rogerson. Mr. Rogerson had served on the faculty at Kempsville High since 1973, except a year when he taught at Cox High School. He was considered an outstanding teacher and had been nominated for Virgina Beach English Teacher of the Year in 1980. He served on the State Pilot Committee for Language Arts unjer the Virginia Standards of Quality mandate and committees concerned with curriculum. He was chairman of the English committee during the most recent self-study of Kempsville High and was freqnently selected to make representations to the school board on behalf of the English program. He was a member of Virginia. Virginia Beach and National Education associations and represented the school in the V BATE and VATE organizations. He was a 1973 honor graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Eta Sigma. Other survivors include his stepmother, Lillie Mae Bunch Roger son of Edenton; two brothers, Jimmy Rogerson of Greensboro and John Rogerson of Edenton. SALLIEL. ROGERSON BELVIDERE - Mrs. Sallie Rebecca Lamb Rogerson, 98, of Route 1, Hobbsville and formerly of Belvidere died Thursday, August 16, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Curtis Chappell of Route 1, Hobbsville. A native of Perquimans County she was the daughter of the late Thomas Edward and Margaret Copeland Lamb and the widow of Charlie Thomas Rogerson, Sr. She was a memberf of Whiteville Grove Baptist Church and its Women's Missionary Union and was a former member of the Belvidere Homemakers Club. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Curtis (Irma) Chappell and Mrs. Sybil Ward, both of Route 1, Hobbsville; a son, Charlie Thomas Rogerson, Jr. of Route 2, Hertford; a sister, Mrs. Norma Smith of Belvidere; three grandchildren and S great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Swindell Funeral Chapel with Rev. William Byrum and Rev. Joseph Willis in charge. Burial followed in Westlawn Memorial Park, Elizabeth City. LESSIE JORDAN BELVIDERE - Mr. Lessie Jordan, 53, of Route 1, Box 284, Belvidere, died Friday evening at the Hertfore Medical Center of sudden illness. A funeral was conducted Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at the Bay Branch AME Zion Church, Belvidere, by the pastor. Rev. Walter L. Leigh. Burial followed in the Saunder Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, Hertford, with Masonci rites conducted by Meridian Masonic Lodge no. 18 of Hertford. The family will be at the resident of the deceased. Visitation will be at Stallings Memorial Chapel, Hertford, Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. Jordan was a native of Belvidere and the son of the late Hezexiah and Mrs. Maude Billups Jordan. Jordan was a member of the Bay Branch AME Zion Church, Belvidere, and the Meridian Masonic Lodge no. 18 of Hertford. He was a self employed carpenter. Jordan is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucy Welch Jordan of the home; six daughters, Mary Archie of Bronix, N.Y., Veronica Miller of Boston, MA., Geraldine Lilly. Dorothy Archie, Betty Jean and Carol Todd of Chesapeake. VA. and Charlie Jordan of Belvidere; and 16 grandchildren. Stallings Memorial Chapel was incharge of the arrangements. KARENS GRIFFIN Mrs. Karene Toppin Griffin, 78, 218 E. King St. died Sunday in Chowan Hospital. She was a native of Chowan County. Burial was held in Beaver Hill Cemetery Tuesday. Graveside services were held at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Robert Kelley. Williford-Barham Funeral Home is in charge. She was a member of the Center Hill Baptist Church. She was also a homemaker and a seamstress. She was the daughter of the late William and Annie Bunch Toppin. She was the wife of James W. Griffin. Surviving are two daughters, Gladys Griffin of Edenton, and Mrs. Delsie Dail of Hertford; three sons, Alma Griffin, Melvin Griffin, and Ray Griffin all of Edenton; 10 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. O.A. offers new fall courses Child care, conservation, the economy, and real estate brokerage will be featured on the "new course" list when the Fall Quarter continuing education program begins on-caropus at College of The Albemarle on September 5. I One of the four subjects, "Conservation-In the People's Hands," is a recertification fourse for public school teachers. Dealing with the significance of natural resources gnd the need for intelligent planning to use them moc^ prudently, the five-week course will be taught by Rodney Johnson, district soil conservationist, from 7 until 9 p.m., beginning on Tuesday, September 11. A second Tuesday evening offering, "Child Care for Administrators," will start on the same date and at the same time. Instructor Phyllis Porcher, former Virginia school system child care coordinator with a master's degree in education, describes the 11-week workshop as an important link to improving the operation and management of centers dedicated to the care of youngsters of working parents. She recommends it for day care employees, administrators, and directors. Two Wednesday evening classes begin on September 5 from 7 until 10 p.m. "The Economy and Wall Street' will be taught by Albemarle Savings and Loan Associaiton vice president Frank Gregory. Involving an explination of stocks and other securities and the exchanges in which they are traded Gregory's students are expected to gain a more thorough understanding of the system to aid them in making more knowledgeable transactions. Norton Byrd, Currituck County realtor, will teach the fourth Dance school to open Z Marsha Gordon Atkins has Announced the opening of a dance school in Perquimans County. Registration for classes fcill be on Thursday, August 30 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Hertford Municipal Building on JJrubb Street. * Mrs. Atkins has received her <Jance training primarily from the Tidewater Ballet Association ijnder the direction of Gene Hammett, Mary Marshall, and ijrack Leadbetter. She has also ?tudied under Janice Barringer, former soloist with the Baltimore ?City Ballet. Mrs. Atkins spent a ?month in New York City to further her jazz training at Luigi ? m n Jazz Centre and Merce - Cunningham Modern Dance Company. Mrs. Atkins is a native of Elizabeth City and has always had a special desire to teach in the community of Hertford. She has been owner and director of the Chowan Academy of Dance in Edenton for the past eight years and her staff is now beginning its second year in Creswell. Hertford classes in ballet, tap, and jazz will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning on Tuesday, September 11. Local briefs Library to start community calendar Do you want to Inform the people of the county about a program you are presenting? Do you want to know when the next high school play will be presented? Do you want to know if there would be a conflict if you scheduled a program for the second Thursday in the month? The Public Libraries in the four counties served by the Pettigrew Regional Library: Chowan, Perquimans, Tyrrell, and Washington Counties, have Community Calendars. These calendars, one for each county, list the activities planned in the county. Any club or agency may list its activities, regular or occasional, on the community calendar. The listing will show the program, sponsoring organization, date, time, and place. Members of the communities will be interested in checking the calendar to find out what is going on in the county. Cancer society to meet The Perquimans County Cancer Soceity will hold their regular quarterly meeting on Monday, August 27, at 8:00 p.m. in the auditorium of the County Office Building on Edenton Road St. The public is encouraged to attend. Crop Insurance policy reminder Farmers who are insured by Federl Crop Insurance for the 1984 crop year are reminded that according to their crop policy, they must give a 15 day notice to the agent servicing their contract, prior to harvest, if they anticipate a loss, says John J. Bazemore, District Director of Federal Crop Insurance. If they have tobacco Insured, a stalk inspector is required after harvest is completed and before the stalks are plowed under. t estival of dolls slated A Festival of Dolls will be held at the Skilled Nursing Facility of Chowan Hospital Friday, August 24, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the Classroom at Unit B. This special attraction, featuring dolls from 1870 to the present will be open to the public as well as being a special activity for the patients, according to Jacqueline Ricks, Director of Volunteer Services. Of special note will be the collection of Paige Quinn who is a collector and will show dolls dating from 1870 to 1920. Other local persons will also display old, unusual, and just favorite childhood dolls. In addition, there will be present day manufactured collectible dolls and handmade sculptured oils that are currently popular.
