. I FmHA State Director visits local county office Larry W. Godwin, State Director of Farmers Home Administration made a tour of the Perquimans and Chowan County FMHA office last week. During his visit, Godwin complimented the local staff on the fine Job they are doing in meeting the credit needs of farmers and rural home owners. He pointed out that $3,885,000 in credit was provided this past fiscal year and that the outstanding principal balance on loans currently held by county residents is S29.90S.000. In addition to farm and single family housing loans, FMHA has provided loans for essential community facilities such as fire departments, water and sewer projects, and schools. Smith selected as outstanding farm agent Lewis W. Smith, Jr., Associate Agricultural Extension Agent in Tyrrell County, has been selected as one of six outstanding young Extension Agents in the state. The selection was made by the North Carolina Association of County Agricultural Extension Agents, and the award was presented at its recent meeting in Charlotte. Smith was recognized for his efforts to find a solution to the alligatorweed problem. This pest hinders the flow of water in about half the canals and ditches in Tyrrell County. Smith is using a series of on-farm tests to try to find the best method for controlling alligatorweed. Information learned in the tests is being passed on to other farmers. Smith has been on the Tyrrell Extension Staff since 1980. He has a degree in agronomy from North Carolina State University. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis W. Smith, Sr. of Route 2, Hertford.
