WILLIAMS Perquimans County Commissioners met briefly Monday morning to clear up old business, and to express their words of appreciation to those commissioners who were leaving office. Commissioner Welly White presented retiring Chairman Joe Nowell with his name plate, and commented that he had "enjoyed the privilege of serving on the board with him, and that the board would miss his presence." Nowell, who has served as a County Commissioner for eight years, was defeated in the May 8th Primary Election in Perquimans County. Commissioner Charles Ward, who was also defeated in May, was not present at the meeting. After other members of the Board and individuals expressed their appreciation to Nowell for work the meeting was adjourned until 1:00p.m. The first order of business for the afternoon meeting was the administering of the oath of office by Perquimans County Clerk of Court Jarvis Ward to the county's two new commissioners and to re-elected Commissioner Lester Simpson and Jeanne C.White, Register of Deeds. Thomas Nixon, a farmer and former County Commissioner, and Wayne Winslow, Sales Manager at Winslow Blanchard Motor Company, are the new members of the Perquimans County Board of Commissioners. After the installation, the first order of business for the new board was the election of a chairman, vice-chairman and a clerk to the Board. W.W. Welly White was elected Chairman of the Board for the coming year, and Lester Simpson will serve as Vice Chairman. Jeanne White will remain as Clerk to the Board. County Board of Education By MONICA ROACH A new year began for the members of the Board on Monday, December 3 at Hertford Grammar School. Jarvis Ward, Clerk of Court, was in attendance to hear the oaths and swear in the members for another year. By unamious votes, Clifford Winslow was elected Chairman and Preston Stevenson was elected j Vice-Chairman to the Perquimans County Board of Education. During the business session of the meeting, the Board: ?Heard comments from William E. Byrum, Principal of Perquimans High School and Gary Q. Stubbins, Principal of Perquimans Union School concerning the requirement of students to take showers in physical education class. These comments consisted of a survey that was taken at Perquimans Union School and the opinions of students and teachers at Perquimans High School. Inadequate facilities and not enough time during physical education class, were the main reasons why teachers, as well as students do not want this to become a requirement. An opinion was made by one of the Board members that if proper privacy and facilities were constructed, the students would probably participate. By decision of the Board members, this matter will be discussed at a later date. ?Noted that no bids had been received for the construction work to be done in the kitchen at Perquimans Union School because of improper publication. ?Was made aware of the bids that were submitted for the site work at Perquimans High School. The bids were rejected, so a decision was made to give this work to the general contractor. \ ?Decided to wait on the digging of the trench for the pipes and wires for the Water Cooling/Heating System at the high school. A comment was made by a Board member that this was not needed until construction began, therefore, this project could wait and will also be given to the general contractor. ?Signed up for the National State Board Association Convention which will be held in California in the early part of 1985. Members that were planning to attend were asked to meet with Superintendent, Pat Harrell as soon as possible to fill out the proper registration forms. ?Agreed to accept the resignation of Parthenia Hill which is effective December 28, 1984. ?Was very pleased to hear that scores of the 1984 Competency Test were higher in region and higher in state than every before. ?Deicided to purchase a Dodge 15-passenger van for the school system. ?Also, noted that new windows were going to be installed at Perquimans High School/King Street this week, and that there was a roof problem at the High School. With no further business, the Perquimans County Board of Education went into executive session. Humphlett elected President Chamber of Commerce 1 985 By JANE B. WILLIAMS Walter Humphlett, Jr. was named President of the Chamber of Commerce in Perquimans County for 1985 Monday night at the 22nd Annual Chamber of Commerce Banquet at Angler's Cove Restaurant. Humphlett, the former manager of Perquimans County Farm Bureau prior to his retirement, stated that he was pleased to be elected, and looked forward to working with the new Board of Directors. Stating that he didn't have much to say, Humphlett kept his acceptance comments within a few sentences, adding at the end that if everyone would work hard to get things done in the next year he might have a lot to say at the banquet. Joining Humphlett on the Board of Directors for 1985 are: Hal Byrum, Vice-President; Larry Chappell, Treasurer; William Wray Chappell; Kent Copeland; Lewis B. Evans; Phillip Lane; Becky W. Winslow; and Shirley E. Perry. In relinquishing her duties as President of the organization Shirley Perry thanked those members present for the pleasure of serving. Perry stated that it had been a busy year for the Chamber, and that although a lot had been accomplished there was still much left to do. In her past President's message on the program Mrs. Perry summmed up her feelings in regards to the past year as follows : "It has surely been a busy year and while we have made progress, there is still much to accomplish. There are challenges that we must face, and opportunities that we must grasp, as we work together to promote the economic, civic and general interest of Perquimans County. We are growing and your continual interest and active support is so vital to the success of Chamber programs and projects." "My appreciation goes to the Secretary/Manager, (Mary Inez Harrell), the Board of Directors and many, many members of the Chamber for their dedicated efforts throughout the year. It has been a very satisfying experience for me to work with you. For all I gave, I feel I received much more la return."
