ELIZABETH CITY-Gladys
Jewel Bradley, 80, of Route 6,
Box 197, Elizabeth City, formerly
of Hertford, died Wednesday
evening, December 25, 1985, in
Albemarle Hospital.
? A native of Oklahoma, she was
the widow of Howard Bradley'.
She was a retired hospital lab
technician and attended the
Hertford United Methodist
Church
? There are no known survivors.
? The body was cremated.
Private memorial services were
held.

HAMPTON, VA-Kenneth Ray
"Kenny" Benton, 29, of La Salle
i^ve., Hampton, Va., died
Wednesday, December 25, in a
drowning accident at Acapulco,
Mexico.
; A native of Norfolk, he was the
son of Albert Lee and Evelyn
Chappell Benton of Norfolk. He
was employed at the Printing
Center in Newport News.
Besides his parents, survivors
include a sister, Mrs. Brenda
Soule of Norfolk; five brothers,
Douglas Benton of Matthew, Va.,
Wayne Benton, Michael Benton
and Tommy Benton, all of Nor
folk, and Clifford Benton of
Gaitherburg, Md. ; his maternal
grandmother, Mrs. Susan Chap
pell of Route 2, Hertford; his
paternal grandmother, Mrs.
Grace Benton of Deland, Fla.;
his maternal great-grandather,
Will Chappell of Eden ton
Funeral arrangements were
incomplete as of press time.
Swindell Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.

ELIZABETH CITY, NC
Thomas A. Lamb, 44, of Route 6,
a native of Perquimans County,
died Saturday, Dec. 21, 1965, in
the Albemarle Hospital.
He was a member of
Parksville Holiness Church.
Survivors included three
sisters, Ellodia L. Raby and Hat
tie Harris both of Elizabeth City
and Florence Boone of Florida;
two half sisters, Alice Ferrell of

The Perquimans County Board
of Education accepted with
regret the resignation of high
school athletic director Pat
Morgan in 1985. During Morgan's
tenure, the county organized an
Athletic Booster Club and many
improvements to the athletic
complex were made. He left to
assume a post in the Rock
ingham County School System.
, In June, Bill Flippen, an assis
tant football coach at the high
school, was named to replace
Morgan as head football coach
and athletic director. Flippen
came to Perquimans County in
the fall of 1984, bringing with him
his wife, Ann, and their sons,
Steve and Todd.
? County Finance Officer, Dur
wood Reed, tendered his resigna
tion in mid-July. Reed resigned
effective October 1 after serving
?in this capacity for more than 30
-years. He was gifted with a gold
"watch by the county commis
sioners for dedicated service.
County Manger Randy Keaton
was appointed to fill Reed's post.
The Hertford BPW Club named
Lucille Winslow its Woman of the
Year in 1985. Winslow was
chosen for her cultural contribu
tions to the Albemarle Region.
Carole Stanley assumed her
duties as recreation director in
October, when former director
Howard Williams left to begin
work with the Dare County
Recreation Department.
Also in October David McCall
became the first Site Manager
for the Newbold-White proper
ties. McCall and his bride, Bonita
Perry McCall, reside in the
restored David Newby House.
It was announced in December
at the Hertford Fire Depart
ment's annual Laides Night Ban
quet that Percy Newbern was
Fireman of the Year. Newbern, a
15 year veteran of the depart
ment, was honored for outstan
ding and dedicated service to the
department. He and his wife,
Nancy, and son, Jeff, reside (Hi
Dobbs Street.

The funeral was conducted at 2
p.m. Monday, Dec. 23rd, in
Twiford Memorial Chapel by the
Rev. Charles Stevenson. Burial
was in Westlawn Memorial Park
Cemetery, with Twiford
Memorial Chapel in charge.

HERTFORD- Marvin Eugene
Davenport, 62, of Route 3, Box
125, died Decern bA 19.
The funeral was conducted
December 21 at 12:30 p.m. in
Twiford's Memorial Chapel by
the Rev. Thomas Supplee. Burial
was in Westlawn Memorial Park
Cemetery. Twifords's Memorial
Chapel, Elizabeth City, was in
charge of arrangements.
Mr. Davenport was the son of
the late Haywood and Melissa
Snell Davenport. He was a native
of Washington County and a
member of Woodland United
Methodist Church. Davenport
was a retired mechanic having
worked at IXL.
Survivors include his wife,
Etheleen Cahoon Davenport of
the home; a daughter, Mrs.
Darleen Lass iter of Hertford; a
son, Cealon Eugene Davenport of
Hertford; a brother, Robert C.
Davenport of Baltimore, Md.,
and a grandchild.

Mr. Meads was the son of the
late Matthew and Mrs. Gracie
Baines Meads, Sr. and the hus

Meads. He was a retired fisher
man and carpenter.
Survivors include four sisters,
Mrs. Irma Fields and Mrs. Ten
nie Reid, both of Burlington,
Miss Emma Meads of the home
and Mrs. Sarah Pierce of
Elizabeth City; five brothers,

1985, at 8:15 p.m. in Albemarle
Hospital after a short illness.

Family Cemetery at Rt. 4, Hert
ford by the Rev. Kendall
Hastings.
She was a native of Per
quimans County but lived in
Elizabeth City for the past 18
years. She was formerly
employed with SuPak as a trim
mer. She was Catholic.
She was the daughter of the
late Lee and Lona Cartwright
Wilson. She is survived by her
husband Edward Walters of
South San Francisco. Her step
mother, Mrs. Mamie Wilson of
Ayden, N.C.; three sisters; Mrs.
Etta Mae Anderson, Mrs. Lona
Smith of Elizabeth City and Mrs.
O'Nella Langely of Rt. 4, Hert
ford; a step-sister, Faye Jones of
Arlington, Va.; 4 brothers,
LeRoy Wilson, Jr., Curtis Wilson,
John Wilson and Quinton Wilson
of Rt. 4, Hertford; 1 half brother,

Harrell died Saturday night in
Pitt Memorial Hospital, Green
ville, from an automobile
accident.
He was a native of Woodville, .

day, Dec. 30th, at 2:00. Burial
will be in the Harrell Family
