Gardeners should hold back on spring planting in January January brings an urge to sow summer-crop seeds indoors. Most people start too early. Check seed packet for outdoor ? planting time and count back wards. Seedlings left too long in . flats become leggy and weak. So hold off. Besides, I've got plenty of other things for you to think about. Order some lily-of-the-valley pips for forcing indoors. If they ' are given at least 75 degree warmth the first week or so, cherry blooms will appear in about three weeks. Plant outside in early spring in a moist, shady area, and feed with a healthy dose of organic fertilizer, such as chicken or other animal manure. Jerusalem cherries are a col orful houseplant, but? do not eat the fruit. This cousin of both the potato and tomato will cause se vere digestive upsets, dermati tis, and cardiac depression, par ticularly in young children. Are some of your houseplants droopy and tired? Here is one possible solution to rejuvenation. Forget potshards and gravel in the bottom of plant containers, says Bonnie Lee Appleton in Gar dening Magazine. These materi als actually raise the water level, making drainage more difficult. Check your plants if you have used any material of this type in the bottom. Remove from con tainer and examine carefully. 4-H troupe now accepting applicants The 4-H Performing Arts Troupe, a group of 4-H perform ers are now taking applications for the 1986 Troupe. Corn production meeting slated Our Annual Corn Production Meeting will be held on Thurs day, January 16th at 7:00 p.m. Due to a conflict, the location has been changed to Hertford Gram mar School Cafeteria. L I Several timely and money sav ing topics will be discussed this meeting. Dr. John Van Duyn, Ex tension Entomologist will speak to us on the "Efficient Use of Soil Insecticides" and up date us on the E&ropean corn borer re search he conducted in 1985. Mr. Paul Lilly, Extension soil Scien tist, will tell us "How to Save Money Through Soil Testing". I will give a brief discussion on the enclosed corn budget and record keeping. In addition to the informative program; awards will be pre sented for the outstanding corn yields which were achieved in 1985. We hope you will plan to extend this invitation to our farm wives. These meetings have tradition ally been seen as men only events, but I believe that the la dies who are involved in the day to day operation of a farm busi ness can benefit from the infor mation presented. There will be a sponsored meal prepared by the Belvidere Volun teer Fire Department. AREA FRUITS AND VEGE TABLE CONFERENCE Wednesday, January 15th? 10:00 a.m.? 3:00 p.m., at the Pasquo tank Agricultural Extension Of fice, Elizabeth City. In our changing Agricultural Economy, many farmers are seeking alternatives to the tradi tional field crops they have been growing. Vegetables often come to mind as a possible alternative crop; however, there is much more to vegetable production than just growing the crop. The second annual Fruit and Vegeta ble Conference will be an excel lent opportunity to learn more about the production and mar keting of vegetable crops. There will be Extension Specialists and Produce Growers present to an swer any questions you may have relate to vegetable produc tion. I believe this meeting will be well worth the time you take to attend. Please call our office by noon January 13th, if you are planning to attend either the Corn Production Meeting 01 the Area Fruits and Vegetable Con ference. It is very important that we know in order to better plan thA mpalc Farmers aren t to blame for high price products Most people want to save the family farm, but not at the cost of higher food prices. That's the word from a Gerogia Experi ment Station agricultural econo mist studying the public's per ceptions of farming and agriculture. "Most people feel that food prices are high as it is and while they say they're concerned about the disappearance of many of the small family run farms, they also indicate that they don't think the government should treat farmers any differently than other small businessmen," according to Jeff Jordan, agri cultural economist at the Georgia Ag Experiment Station. Preliminary figures show a high number of "undecided" and contradictory survey responses that, in general, reveal people don't understand the structure of the food production and market ing system. For example, while the majority of people said they felt the government should do something to save the family farm, they also feel the govern ment should get out of American agriculture altogether. Jordan says people don't blame farmers for the crisis in agriculture, but see them as vic tims of a system. "People say they think of farmers as honest, hard-working and independent," he said. "They see farmers as individuals rather than asan institution, so it's easier to identify and empa thize with them." Jordan says most people have no idea of how much money is in volved in farming or how farm operations are financed. "This is one big reason why farmers don't get more empathy than they do," Jordan said. "People just can't identify with borrowing hundreds of thousands of dollars to plant crops."
