F eatures Chappell volunteers time and energy By SUSAN HARRIS Catching Larry Chappell long enough to carry on an uninter rupted conversation is a little like holding a breaking wave on the shore. One minute he's talk ing to you, then the scanner ; sounds and his ears perk for the j: message. Next the bell rings, sig naling that a customer needs !? gas. This dynamic Perquimans County native last week received the coveted Jaycee Distin guished Service Award. The award is presented annually to a person between 18 and 35 who ex hibits meritorious service to their family, community and country. It is the organization's highest honor. When asked how he felt when he received the award, Larry said, "I felt really good, but it was a good thing they didn't ask me to say anything. I was speechless." He added, "They had some other good folks nomi nated." "It's something I'e wanted," he concluded. And he's worked hard to achieve the recognition. Larry joined the county's res cue squad in 1973 while still in high school. He has since become an EMT. He pulls both day and night duty, which means spend ing some nights away from home. It has also meant leaving his business short-handed, but Larry is willing to make the sac rifice to help those in need. Why does Larry give so freely of himself to the squad? "I see that they (the squad members) need help. Since it's volunteer, it makes you want to put out more," Larry answers. Everybody has to work with me," he said of his employees. "I go sometimes even if I'm not on duty." Larry said earning his EMT is something he's most proud of. "That's a hard thing to get... I feel like I've accomplished some thing." ? In 1979 the Jaycees Outstand ing Young Rescuer Award was presented to him for outstanding service. But the rescue squad isn't the only volunteer organization in which the 31-year old is active. He is also a lieutenant in the Hertford Volunteer Fire Depart ment which he Joined in 1974. Larry is a five-year veteran of the department's Special Rescue Unit. Larry presently serves as trea surer of the Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce. He has worked tirelesly in the annual Chamber-sponsored Indian Sum mer Festival since its 1962 incep tion. The organizations to which Larry belongs are fortunate to have such a dedicated member. He also supports the county's youth and civic endeavors by sponsoring athletic teams and contributing to numerous char ities. His efforts in volunteer pro grams have also earned Larry recognition on the state level. He was recognized by former Gover nor Jim Hunt when he received the prestigious Human Service Award in 1964. The 1974 graduate of Perqui mans High is owner-operator of Larry's Drive-In. He began working part-time at the estab lishment for former owner Dick Long (Dick's Drive-in) at age 15. After high school he worked for two years with Jackson Whole sale before buying the combina tion restaurant-gas station in 1976. Larry said everything's just about the same as it was when long retired. Each day Larry goes to his place of business around 5:00 ) a.m. to prepare for the day, in cluding the morning and af ternoon 'coffee sessions' when friends and neighbors gather to drink coffee and 'chew the fat'. larry lives on Wynn Fork Road with his wife, the former Susan Bunch, and their seven-year old son, Stephen. He is the son of Sey mour and Doris Chappell of Win fall, and the grandson of Ada Carver of Belvidere. Larry's family has ample rea son to be proud of him as he exemplifies a line from the Jay cee Creed: "...Service to human ity is the best work of life." Hunter kills snake during winter months 20 YEARS AGO SNAKES STILL OUT THOUGH IT'S JANUARY: Clif ton Welch Washington Lyons, Jr. and Furman Brickhouse, while out rabbit hunting near Hertford Monday afternoon shot and killed a five foot rattle snake with five rattles and a button. The snake coiled up and shook the five rat tles. The alerted hunters shot and killed the snake and brought it by The Perquimans Weekly office, in hopes that it would make other hunters cautious of the snakes. It has always been said that snakes hybernate in the winter. How ever, Monday was unseasonably warm and this snake must have thought winter was over.
