Union highlights The In-School Suspension Pro gram located at Perquimans Union School in Winfali, under the direction of Luther Overton, is experiencing it's second year of operation within the county. This year the program has been able to operate much smoother than it did in the pre vious year, probably, because of many contributing factors. First, because the In-School Suspension Program had its beginning in the county last year, many of the stu dents were aware of the conse quences of being sent to In School Suspension. Secondly, the program underwent a 'real' learning experience during the first year, therefore, this year many of the rough spots have been ironed out. Finally, and of utmost importance is the overall support from the total staff at Perquimans Union School, which has really helped the program during it's operations. There are still areas that have to be remedied, but with contin ual help from the staff members, concerned parents, and friends in the county, the In-School Sus pension Program will continue its operation. The major aim of the In-School Suspension program is to keep the students in school in a learn ing environment. Thus far, that has been done with much suc cess. FFA happenings It will also be the site of the Fed eration's FFA Hunter Safety Contest held in April. Apprecia tion is given to the School Admin istration for providing this land to build the range. Interesting things are happen ing in the FFA and Agriculture classes at Perquimans County High School. In October the Agri culture classes visited the North Carolina State Fair with over 82 members taking part in the field trip. This trip was very educatio nal. Many students saw for the first time different breeds of live stock and experienced the thrill of the agriculture atmosphere of the fair. A special thank you goes to Mr. Ed Nixon who helped c ha pa rone the group. In November six FFA mem bers took part in the FFA Soil Judging Contest competing against 16 teams from District I. Team members included Penny Casper, Bill Smith, Michelle Lane, Tina Wolfgang, Matt Wil liams, and Edison Felton. The Agriculture classes are very busy working on their yearly projects. Ag I is building picnic tables, Ag II, barbecue cookers and Ag III, a 5' x 16' util ity trailer. These projects allow the students to apply what they learn in class. The completed projects will be offered for sale to the public in late February and early March. Another major project being done is the building of a Hunter Safety Range. This range will be used to teach safe firearm hand ling during the Hunter Safety course. we know where wc can find information upon it" You can find a wealth of information from the Federal Government at Depository libraries.
