Conservation poster contest gets underway in schools In the Albemarle Soil and Wa ter Conservation District, the Soil and Water Conservation Committee in each county spon sor a conservation poster contest during the month of February in the 4th, 5th and 6th grades. Conservation booklets entitled "The Story of Land, Its Use and Misuse through the centuries" has been distributed to each stu dent, also guides for her teachers POSTER CONTEST ? Mrs. Grace Cos ton, a retired school teacher, better known to the students as the "Conserva tion Lady," is assisting the dis trict supervisors again this year. Mrs. Cos ton, as she visited each classroom, delivered a conserva tion message. She stressed that conservation is a concern to each of us and should be taken se riously. Teaching your younger generation to become "caretak ers" of our soil and other re sources for a better land is a real challenge. Mrs. Cos ton explained the rules, poster materials and basis upon which all posters will be judged. She urged each stu dent to do his best in represent ing his class and school. The posters will be judged and a first and second place winner will be selected from each grade. These two posters will be entered in the District Contest which will be held the 26th of February at Angler's Cove Restaurant. The District Contest is spon sored by Albemarle Electric Membership Corporation in co operation with the Albemarle District Supervisors. Brown named award winner The United States Achieve ment Academy announced today that Denise Brown has been named a United States National Award winner in Art. This award is a prestigious honor very few students can ever hope to attain. In fact, the Aca demy recognizes less than 10 per cent of all American high school students. Miss Brown who attends Per quimans County High School was nominated for this National Award by Deborah Coates an art teacher at Perquimans County High School. Miss BroWn will ap pear in the United States Achievement Academy Official Yearbook, published nationally. Union highlights With the century being the time of space exploration and re search, the tragedy of the Chal lenger space flight has hit Ameri cans very hard. As a tribute to the crew of the Challenger Space Shuttle, Miss Talley's fifth and sixth grade class would like to share a poem they have written in remembrance of these great American heroes. THE STAR REACHERS We don't know why this terrible tragedy, Happened to these courageous people. The Challenger space flight was a dream, For all of America.
