I am also inter ested in working to find solutions to help the agrictultural econ omy. THOMPSON? To represent the people in the Albemarle Area and the State of North Carolina. WALKER? My primary goal will be to encourage the eco nomic growth of the Albemarle Area, whether it is through agri culture, tourism, or expanded clean industries. I have a deep respect for the history of our area and its influ ence on our economic growth. We must protect our good land and water for future generations. However, we must continue to provide the economic stimulus for the area to grow and prosper. Do you have a plan of action to cany out your goals or ideals? PERRY? I will keep an open door policy by listening to the man on the street and keeping in touch with local officials on mat ters of interest in all First Dis trict Counties. I will try to be in formed on the issues and work with the District delegation to Raleigh for legislation that will be most beneficial to the p ople of our area. THOMPSON? I plan to work very closely with the elected offi ciate and to listen to the concerns of the people in this district. Pri marily 1 plan to make myself available to the people. WALKER? I will give what is necessary to be our full-time ad vocate in Raleigh. I will listen. I know how important citizen input is to good government. I will not disappear after I'm elected. You will help make those decisions that affect your daily lives. What do you, as a candidate for public office, see as the ma jor is sues and concerns in this elec tion, and what is your position on these issues? PERRY? Major issues at this time seem to be completion of four-la ning U.S. 17; funding to hire and retain good teachers; and job opportunities. I favor funding for the comple tion of U.S. 17 because it will di rectly and indirectly have a posi tive, long term effect on each of these major issues. Since additio nal funding will be needed for the Highway Fund to accomplish this, I favor a modest gasoline tax increase if assured that the First District will get its fair share. This could be done by leg islation based on miles of roads and population for the various highway districts. I favor adequate funds to keep our good teachers and to be com petitive with the job market. I favor bringin in more non-pol luting industries that would pro vide jobs and increase the tax base, ultimately putting more tax dollars in our local economy. More jobs are needed if the work fare program is to be a success and the best social program is a good job. THOMPSON? 1 believe that education, agriculture, transpor tation and natural resources are the major topics of concern at this time. I support the Basic Education Plan, and support C.O.A. and Elizabeth City State University. I will continue to research and promote the use of agricultural products, and will work toward the development of a road sys tem for this region. I also support planned growth that will protect our shorelines and rivers. WALKER? Education-I favor the Basic Education Plan the im plementation of it. Trasnportation-I will work to continue the four-laning of our major highway arteries. I will negotiate with leaders of our northern border state for better interstate cooperation. Economic Growth-I will work hard to sell the Albemarle's at tributes to clean industries and cooperate with those existing businesses- agricultural and tourist oriented- for future growth. I will be accessible wl\pn needed.
