the 4th Battalion, 325th Infantry Reg
iment, Fort Bragg, N.C.
The move was made as part of the
U.S. Army's Cohesion Operational
Readiness and Training (COHORT)
System.
COHORT was designed to enhance
mission effectiveness and strengthen
unit cohesion and esprit de corps by
providing soldiers the opportunity for
long-term identification with their
units.
His wife, Tracie, is the daughter of
Lenora Moore of Hertford, N.C.

Pvt. 1st Class Tammy Askew,
daughter of William H. Askew of Ru
ral Route 1 and Margaret E. Moore of
121 Wynne Fork Court, both of Hert
ford, N.C. has completed basic train
ing at Fort McClellan, Ala.
During the training, students re
ceived instruction in drill and cere
monies, weapons, map reading, tac
tics, military courtesy, military
justice, first aid, and Army history
and traditions.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA-George
Martin Old, Sr., 69, of 404 Cedar
Lane, Virginia Beach, Va., died Fri
day, August 8, 1966 in Norfolk Gen
eral Hospital.
A native of Norfolk he was the hus
band of Mrs. Frances Wilson Old, a
native of Hertford. He was retired as
an assistant video-president with Vir
ginia National Bank.
Besides his wife survivors include
two sons, George M. Old, Jr. of Vir
ginia Beach and Joseph L. Old of Wil
liamsburg, Va.; a sister, Miss Jean
C. Old of Norfolk, Va. and 4 grand
children.
Graveside services were held Mon
day at 11:00 a.m. in Cedarwood Cem
etery, Hertford with the Rev. John
Emmert officiating. Swindell Fune
ral Home was in charge of local ar
rangements.

HERTFORD? William Loranzo
Sawyer, Sr., 83, of Route 4, Hertford,
died Saturday afternoon, August 16,
1986, in Albemarle Hospital.
A native of Chowan County he was
the husband of the late Lena Etta
Twiddy Sawyer. He was a retired
lumber inspector with L.R. Foreman
Lumber Company.
Survivors include two daughters,
Mrs. Vernon (Lena) Han-ell of Route
3, Hertford and Mrs. Peggy Muldrow
of Hickory; a son, W.L. "Bill" Sa
wyer of Hertford; five sisters, Mrs.
Louise Shell, Mrs. Hazel Roebuck
and Mrs. Katie Thomas, all of Vir
ginia Beach, Va., Mrs. Carrie Craw
ford of Portsmouth, Va. and Mrs.
Adria Forehand of Chesapeake, Va.,
8 grandchildren and 5 great-grand
children.
Graveside services were held Mon
day at 2:00 p.m. in Cedarwood Ceme
tery with the Rev. Raymond Need
ham officiating. Swindell Funeral
Home was in charge of arrange
ments.
Pallbearers were Douglas Harrell,
Thomas Sawyer, Scott Anderson,
Gerald Warren, Jerry Boucher and
Mark Anderle.

TYNER, NC-George Walter Da
vidson, Jr., 58, died Aug. 17, 1986 in
Chowan Hospital.
The funeral was conducted Tues
day at 2 p.m. in Williford-Barham
Funeral Chapel by the Rev George
Cook. Burial was in the family ceme
tery. Williford-Barham Funeral
Home was in charge of arrange
ments.
Mr. Davidson was a native of Cho
wan County and employed at Eden
ton Marina. He was a member of Bal
lards Bridge Baptist Church. He was
the son of the late Goerge Walter Da
vidson, Jr.
Survivors include his mother, Mrs.
Elizabeth Hayes Davidson; his wife,
Blanche Russell Davidson; three
daughters, Blanche Faye Durant of
Sommerville, S.C., Mrs. Betty By
rum of Tyner and Mrs. Annette
Trueblood of Hertford; two sisters,
Mrs. Lessie Mae Weston and Mrs.
Marjorie Sellers both of Norfolk,
Va.; a brother, Elmer Davidson of
Ga. ; and four grandchildren.

Street, Hertford, died Monday eve
ning, August 11, 1986, in Chowan Hos
pital.
A native of Chowan County she was
the daughter of the late Cornelius and
Mary Mizzell Tarkenton and the wife
of William Phillip Lane, Sr. She was
a member of Bethleham Church of
Christ and its Ladies Missionary So
ciety.
Besides her husband survivors in
clude two daughters, Mrs. William
( Edna Ruth) Moore of Seven Springs
aad Mrs. Edgar Ray (Joanne) White
of Route 3, Edenton; a son, W. Phillip
Lane, Jr. of Hertford; 11 grandchil
dren and 1 great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in Swindell
Funeral Chapel, Hertford, with the
Rev. Ronnie Woolard officiating.
Burial followed in Cedarwood Ceme
tery.

ven White, Ed Lane, J.B. Perry, Ray
Chedester and Gene Phillips.

Family reunion held
I The Nixon HoUowell Family had a
reunion, Sunday, August S, for the
ninth consecutive year in the Great
Hope Baptist Church Fellowship
Hall.
The Rev. Edgar Bunch, asked the

joyed by all and several pictures
were taken.
Thirty-two were present, including
the Minister and his wife.
Class offered in self defense
Due to recent burgularies in the
Winfall area, the Winfall Police De
partment is organizing a class for la
dies covering self defense, firearms
training, and home security.
The course will be conducted by lo
cal law enforcement officers, and
representatives from the department
of crime preventation and public
safety.
The course is open to all ladies in
the county. All interested in partici
pating in the program may call and
leave their name with the Winfall Po
lice department at 428-5015. Time and
place of class are yet to be deter
mined.
