Church A God's rule will come and his kingdom will not Derish ? i UOU'S RULE WILL COME (OuMI:l, IMS) i "There was given Him dominion, ! and glory, and a kingdom, that all j people, nations and languages should serve Him: His dominion is an ever ! lasting dominion, which shall not ? pass away, and His kingdom that which shall not be destroy ed " (Dan iel 7:14) God is the Lord of history Nations come and go. Leaders rise and fall. The life span of an individual on eartrhis limited to a few score years. "We spend our yean as a tale that is told." (Psalm 90:?) But to God be longs eternity, and the ongoing sweep of history is in His hands. Whether men and nations choose to ' walk the ways of God, or whether we set ourselves against Him, he will prevail. His ultimate will shall be ac complished. Our lesson for today deals with this truth. "No nation has emerged from the womb of history as a surprise to God, nor came to it's demise without God's hand." (Hershal M. Hobbs). The Hebrew nation, about which we have been studying for the past 13 weeks, originated in an act of God. God chose this people to His mission people to a pagan world. They were in Egypt in bondage, so God, through the human leadership of Moses, re moved the people from the grasp of the Egyptian Pharoah's hand, and eventually settled them in the land at Pa man God gave them laws which they were to live by. They were to be a show-case nation so that the pagan nations of the world might ice the ad vantage in serving Israel'* Jehovah, the one true God The nation turned to sinfulness and idolatry? and con tinued in sin generation after genera tion. God raised up prophets to be His spokesmen, and for centuries gave the people guidance and warning. When this failed to bring the people to repentance and a return to righ teousness, He used Babylon as His rod of chastisement. The people were now in Babylon, in exile, having been defeated and captured by the armies of Kins Nebuchadnezzar God disciplined the people but did not destroy them for He had plans for their future? at least for a remnant of them. God used Daniel in a mighty way during the exile. DANIEL'S VISION (Daaiel 8:1) The young prophet Daniel had been taken into Babylonian exile about the year 906 B.C. The time of this vision was some 56 years later. It was dur ing the time that Belshazzar reigned asking. Belshazzar was the grandson of King Nebuchadnezzar. The vision which Daniel had from God, in this instance, covered a pe riod of but a few centuries into the future? about 400 years. In the vision Daniel saw a two-horned ram push ing west, northward and southward, with no beast able to withstand him. From our knowledge of history we understand this to be the Medo-Per sian rise to power. The vision contin ues. A goat, having one horn, comes from the west, attacks the ram, breaks his two horns and stamps him into the ground. The he goat is the kingdom of Greece, and the great horn, Alexander, the Great. He was powerful, and the Persians were powerless before him. Alexander died less than ten years later. The horn of the be goat is broken and four little horns come up in it's place. When Alexander died, the kingdom was divided between four of his generals. Prom one of these four horns, a little horn sprouts and exalts itself greatly, even against "the Prince of the Hosts." (the Lord) One of the four generals was named Se leucus. Prom history we understand that that king, "a king of fierce counte nance," to be Antiochus IV. his reign was a time of fierce persecution against God's people. He has been de scribed as "the incarnation of evil." Verse 24 tells us, however, "His power shall be mighty, but not be his own power." This evil king would rule only by the permissive will of God. Space permits us to but barely touch on this important lesson. Read the eighth chapter of Daniel for the full Story. God is the God of creation and his tory. Men and nations may defy Him for a time, thwart His devine plan far a season but "God's rule ride will come." i Church News Revival services set The Rocky Hock Baptist Church will hold its Fall Revival August 24 29, with the Reverend Bobby Hewitt as the guest speaker. HOLDING BOOKS TOO CLOSE If you think your child hold* book* too close to his eyes when ho road*, you may want to havo hi* oyos checked to find out if ho hot a vision problem When children first begin to road, they usually look at book* with largo print and lots of spoce between the lino*. Once In school, however, and as they advonce into upper grades, the type Is not as large. Getting used to the difference in type size may be the only prubl+irfi at first. To compensate for the difference, they moy hold boOks closet to their oyos for awhile, tut N the habit continues .beyond a reasonable timO. it moy bo wise to havo their eye* chocked by your eye specialist. Even if your child paMod the eye tost at school, you should not lake if for granted that ho doosnt havo a vision problem, lye tests given at school are usually simple tests of what a child can see at 30 foot. Passing this tost with a "20/20" rating, however, does not mean that he has perfect vision. It moons only that ho con sOe at 20 foot what the normal ChMd con see at 20 feet. Dr. A.P. DOWNUM 103 W. Marshall Tetterton, President of the bank, said the Warrenton office, which opened over two years ago, failed to generate enough business to justify remaining open. Tetterton said, "We knew it would be a challenge for the Warrenton of flee to meet the financial require ments we have for any office. But we opened the office here because our Bank has always had a commitment to serving smaller communities in rural areas." He added, "Our experience has not been satisfactory, so we have reluc tantly requested the Banking Com missioner for permission to close this office." Tetterton noted that the bank's larger Norlina office is only four miles from Warren ton and that cus tomers can be served there. "Because the Warrenton office has operated as a 'satellite' branch of Norlina, our personnel in Norlina are familiar with our customers in War renton and their needs," he said. Your fune ral director can ossist you to learn the status of a family plot or in securing a new one. Respectfully, ^uiindell Jffuneral Home, 3nc. 509 Dobbs Street Hertford, N.C. 426-7311 SORROW AND REPENTANCE George Wilmore Pastor Mt. Sinai Baptist Church There is one way to avoid sorrow, 6void sin. Even then sympathy will arouse sorrow on account of sin of others. As long as there is evil in the world there will be tears and sorrow. It is not the sorrow which is to be regretted, but the sin which is its cause. "For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salva tion not to be repented of; but the sorrow of the world worketh death." (II Cor. 7:10). The ungodly may sorrow because they have sinned. What are the characteristics of this sorrow? When the irreligious are rebuked or chastened for wrong-doing, their vanity is wounded, anger is aroused, resentment is built up and, of course, an excuse must be made. Times have changed, every one else is doing it, I just thought I could do it one time to see how it felt. The outcome of this sorrow is death; instead of being profitable, it is a no win situation, drawing the thoughtsaway from the moral heinousness of sin, and confining the sinner in courses whose only end is spiritual death. The sorrow which is godly is occasioned by the recognition of the sin as an offense against the Di vine Law. "Against thee, thee only, have I sinned." Godly sorrow recognizes that sin grieves the Divine heart. As a tender child grieves to heart his father's spirit, so a truly sensitive nature is pained in griev ing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Jesus suffered on the cross, that's enough. Let us not abuse the grace of God. The repentance to which godly sorrow leads is a change of mind and purpose. It is a turning from temptation, excuse making, even societies whims, to a God who has been revealed to us in Jesus Christ. Godly sorrow and true repentance issue salvation. To be sorry for sin and turn from it only leads one place, Jesus Christ. "I am the way, the truth and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
