And "Repubiician Washington stumbles on... (showing) clear signs neglect," Sanford added. At a news conference in Raleigh, Sanford pointed out that farm in come has fallen to its lowest level since the Depression, that the US is/for the first time in a genera tion/running a negative trade balance, and that too many farms are going out of business. North Carolina, for instance, has lost 19 percent of its farms over the past five years, a rate more than double the national average. Sanford said the working farmers who are members of his Farm Ad visory Council tell him the biggest problem is Washington's "attitude," r one he said they characterized aft "neglect/willful, not benifn, neglict/and pure disdain for the American family farmer /that it k all right for family farms to fade away ." Sanford outlined a number of ideas suggested by his farm council in cluding: reforms in farm credit and in price and marketing systems; debt restructuring; development of a comprehensive fair trade policy; in ternational cooperation in reduclrc interest rates; and a reduction of the*' massive federal budget deficit. "As North Carolina's Senator, I in tend to take the lead in designing a new farm policy that will enable farmers to make a profit from their efforts, and that will help restore dignity and vitality to our rural com munities," Sanford said. "I intend to be, as I always have been, the champion of the North Carolina farmer." v ? ' -.V Tke Come Celebrate Our 3rd Anniversary (September 22-27) | ? Refreshments ?Registration for door prizes ?
