FLORENCE R. LILLEY
Hertford? Mrs. Florence Ro
vena Morse Stallings Lilley, 70, of
Rt. 4, Box 675, died Saturday, Oct. 8
in her home.
The funeral was conducted Tues
day at 2 p.m. in New Hope United
Methodist Church. Burial was in
Westlawn Memorial Park. Twi
ford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth
City, was in charge of the arrange
ments.
Mrs. Lilley was a native of Per
quimans. She was a homemaker
and a member of New Hope United
Methodist Church.
Mrs. Lilley was the wife of Mr.
Bonnie M. Lilley of the home and
the daughter of the late Mr. Ray
Morse, Sr. and Mrs. Florence Sa
wyer Morse.
Other survivors include two
daughters, Mrs. Harvey (Ann)
Butt and Mrs. Fred (Audrey)
Jones both of Hertford; one step
daughter, Elizabeth Ann Bartholo
mew of Raleigh; one son, Mr. Car
son Lee Stallings, Jr., of Hertford;
one step-son, Mr. Bonnie Ray
"Skeeter" Lilley of Plymouth; one
sister, Vergie M. Stallings of Hert
ford; one brother, Mr. Ray Morse,
Jr. of Gates; 10 grandchildren and
four step-grandchildren; and
seven great-grandchildren.
SAVANNAH ROUNTREE
Belvidere? Miss Savannah
Rountree, 90, formerly of Belvi
'dere, died Monday, October 10, in
? Chowan Hospital.
A native of Chowan County, she
"?was the daughter of the late Annie
Stallings and Moses Rountree.
Miss Rountree was a homemaker
and a member of Sandy Cross Bap
tist Church.
Survivors include several nieces
and nephews.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, October 12, at the
Sandy Cross Baptist Church with
Rev. Bobby Hewitt officiating.
" Burial followed in the Stallings
Rountree Family Cemetery. Swin
dell Funeral Home was in charge
of arrangements.
Memorial donations may be
' made to the Chowan County Res
cue Squad or to the Belvidere
Chappell Hill Fire Department.
THELMA WINSLOW ELLIOTT
Hertford? Miss Thelma Winslow
Elliott, 86, of 102 Phelps St. died
Monday, Oct. 10, in Chowan Hospi
tal.
A native of Perquimans County
she was the daughter of the late Ef
fie Winslow and Joseph F. Elliott.
She had retired as principal of
Hertford Grammar School. Miss
Elliott had worked as a teacher in
Marion, Franklinton, Halifax, and
Perquimans County Schools. She
had also served as a principal in
Halifax. Miss Elliott had served
two terms on the Perquimans
County Board of Education.
She was an active member of the
Hertford United Methodist Church
where she was a former Sunday
school teacher, past chairman of
the Administrative Board and the
Pastor-Parish Committee and a
member of the Wesley Circle of the
United Methodist Women. Miss El
liott was a member of the Pi Chap
ter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society
International and a member of the
state and local PTA's.
Survivors include three sisters,
Mary E. Holliday of Scotland
Neck, Dorothy E. Godwin of
Williamston, and Ruth E. Winslow
of Hertford; four nieces, Sara E.
Wins low of Hertford, Anne W.
Manning of Abilene, Tex., Lou G.
Celebreeze of Cleveland, Ohio and
Beverly G. Mills of Williamston;
and a nephew, Dennis H. Holliday,
Jr. of Scotland Neck.
Graveside services were held
Wednesday, October 12, at 4:30
p.m. in Cedarwood Cemetery,
Hertford, with Rev. Ray Wittman
officiating. Swindell Funeral Home
was in charge of arrangements.
Donations may be made to the
Organ Fund of Hertford United
Methodist Church, the Perquimans
County Rescue Squad, the Ameri
can Cancer Society or the Museum
of the Albemarle.
BENNIE F. WILKIN'S
Edenton, N.C.? Bennie Frank
Wilkins, 80, of Rt. 1, a retired car
man, died Oct. 5, 1988 in a hospital.
Mr. Wilkins, a native of Perqui
mans County, N. C., retired from
Norfolk Southern Railway Co. He
was a member of Rocky Hock Bap
tist Church and Rocky Hock Ruri
tan Club.
Survivors include his wife, Bes
sie Nixon Wilkins; a daughter,
Emma Lou Guy of Gloucester; two
sons, Garland Wilkins and Robert
Wilkins, both of Edenton; a sister,
Carrie Byrum of Tyner, N. C.;
three brothers, Charlie Wilkins and
Vernon Wilkins, both of Sunbury,
N. C., and Owen Wilkins of Eliza
beth City; four grandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted at 2
p.m. Friday in Rocky Hock Baptist
Church by the Revs. George Cooke
and Bob Young. Burial was in
Nixon family cemetery. Williford
Barham Funeral Home handled
the arrangements.
PHILIP S. McMULLAN
Edenton? Philip Sidney McMul
lan, 90, of 100 S. Granville Street,
Edenton, the past President and
Chairman of the Board of Edenton
Cotton Mills from 1920 until his re
tirement in 1987, died Friday, Octo
ber 7, 1988 in Chowan Hospital.
A native of Perquimans County
he was the son of the late Sidney
Merriman and Penelope Whedbee
McMullan and the husband of the
late Annie Williams McMullan.
A community leader he served
for 30 years on the Edenton-Cho
wan School Board, was a former
member of the Chowan County
Board of Elections and the Eden
ton Utilities Board. He received the
Silver Beaver Award from the Boy
Scouts of America and a public
service award from the Edenton
Chowan Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of St. Paul's
Episcopal Church where he served
as a vestryman, attended Trinity
College (now Duke University) and
was a member of the Duke Univer
sity Alumni Association's Half
Century Club. McMullan was an
Army veteran of World War I and a
60 year member of the Edward
Bond Post No. 40 of the American
Legion.
Survivors include a daughter,
Mrs. Anne M. Jones of Edenton; a
son, Philip S. McMullan, Jr. of
Hertford and 8 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Mon
day at 2:00 p.m. in Holy Trinity
Episcopal Church, Hertford, with
Rev. George Tompkins and Rev.
W. I. Wolverton officiating. Burial
followed in the Church Cemetery
with Swindell Funeral Home of
Hertford in charge of arrange
ments.
Donations may be made to the
Holy Trinity Episcopal Church
General Fund.

One Stop Auto holds
customer appreciation day
Sunday "Missing Mill Park"
came alive with the sights and
sounds of a "Fun Day in the Park"
as One Stop Auto Parts of Hertford
honored their customers with Cus
tomer Appreciation Day.
The day featured a variety of
events including games for kids
and adults, competitive events for
local fire depts, music, and more.
A special guest appearance was
made by Elvira and Grandma and
the girls.
Hertford Fire Dept. won the fire
mans contests, which featured wa
ter balloon tossing, bear hauling,
and racing with clown shoes and
women's undergarments on and
more..
The crowd rooted for their favor
ite dept., and the Hertford Dept.
was awarded $100.00 for winning
the competition.
In addition to all the games and
entertainment, representatives
from Gates, a manufacturer of
belts and hoses, Perfect Circle, a
manufacturer of engine kits and
supplies, and Car Quest were also
on hand to discuss their products
and services which are available at
One Stop Auto Parts. The Car
Quest representative was demon
strating Tech-Net Services, avail
able also at One Stop Auto.
In addition to the representatives
from Gates, Perfect Circle and Car
Quest, Interstate Tire was also rep
resented on Sunday with a display.
The Perquimans County Jaycees
operated a concession stand
throughout the afternoon, the pro
ceeds of which will be split between
the fire depts., who participated in
the fireman's contest, with the ex
ception of Hertford, who won. The
other depts. are Durrants Neck,
Bethel, Inter-county, and Belvi
dere. Approximately $200 was
raised.
One Stop Auto Parts also pre
sented the Perquimans County
Sheriff's Dept., the Hertford Police
Department, and the Perquimans
County Rescue Squad $100.00 each.
Several nice door prizes were
also given away on Sunday by One
Stop Auto Parts, and the "Fun Day
in the Park" was enjoyed by all.
I would like to thank everyone who
helped make our "Day In The Park" a
very special one.
To our customers, the local fire de
partments and Jaycees, I appreciate
your participation.
My deepest gratitude to the employ

friends who helped make this day a
