She is currently employed with IBM in Rockville, Maryland. Mr. Read attended Virginia Mili tary Institute, Lexington, Va. and George Mason University, Fairfax, Va. He will receive a degree in En gineering-Drafting in December. The wedding will take place in Gaithersburg, Md. on October 21, 1989. Brian Center residents enjoy many activities By: PatRountree Activities Director Acknowledging our gratefulness to the community, we wish to thank Pettigrew Library for their Out reach Visit, showing film and bringing books to our residents. Au gust 2nd we were shown an inter esting and humorous movie on the "Beaver". Doris Hoggard is in charge of this program. She does a great job. From Bethel Baptist Church, Marq Gray came August 3rd to teach us about the bible. Residents look forward to seeing this teacher as well as his teachings. Sunday, August 6th, Faith As sembly of God Church, Hertford, conducted a service with music by guitar, piano and choir. The min ister brings a monthly message to us. August 7th, the Happy Home Church of Tyner, presented its quarterly puppet show to Brian Center. The theme was "Come Walk With Jesus". Rev. and Mrs. Pillow, assisted by Shelton Goodwin, a young member of the church, entertained us with a Sing-A-Long of favorite hymns. Young Shelton also sang a solo, "Amazing Grace". August 8th a Music Program was presented by members of Beatrice Layden's family from Portsmouth, at 7 p.m. It was delightful. August 10th, Marq Gray returned with his Bible teachings. August 13th, Starlight Church of Christ brought their inspiring mes sage, choir and ushers. The min ister Bishop Lee Gordan delivered the sermon. ? Community happenings Memory Lane Seniors plan picnic The Memory Lane Senior Club will hold a picnic on Monday, August 21 at the home of Johnetta Pettingil. All members are invited to come and bring a covered dish. Nutrition site menus for next week The Nutrition Site menu for the week of August 21 - 25 is as follows : Monday - tuna salad, Vi hard boiled egg, homemade potato salad, mari nated diced fresh tomatoes with green pepper and onions, 4 crackers, margarine, congealed lime jello and milk. Tuesday - paprika baked chicken, glazed carrots, seasoned green beans, whole wheat bread, margarine, watermelon and milk. Wednesday - counfry fried steak, mixed vegetables, sliced tomatoes, bran square, margarine, lemon pudding and milk. Thursday - baked turkey breast with gravy, cranberry sauce, dressing, sweet potato casserole, buttered broccoli, corn bread, margarine, yellow cake with chocolate icing and milk. Friday - oven fried chicken, potato salad, seasoned collards, biscuit, margarine, brownie and milk. Health clinic schedules set The August clinic schedule for Perquimans Health Department is as follows: August 18 - general pm, wic all day, August 21 - prenatal am, family planning pm, August 24 - teen clinic am. Weight management course set Edenton? LIFESTEPS, a 15-week weight management program devel oped by the National Dairy Council, will be offered at Chowan Hospital starting Tuesday, September 12. The program, taught by Chowan Hospital Assistant Food Services Di rector, Karen Tynch, who has a masters degree in Food Nutrition, will feature topics to include: monitoring your eating, increasing physical activity, judging portion size, your eating style, and dealing with tempta tions. Participants will develop a long-term eating and activity program through nutritionally adequate diet, behavior modification, and physical activity. Cost for the 15-week program, which includes weight management materials, is $120. For additional information or to register, call Karen Tynch at Chowan Hospital at 482-8451, ext. 259. The weekly one-hour classes will be limited to 18 participants. Registra tion deadline is August 21. Water Quality Board to meet The Albemarle Commission will be holding its first Regional Water Quality Committee meeting on Monday, August 28, at 7:00 p.m. at the Walnut Island Restaurant in Currituck. This committee, com prised of individuals appointed by local governments, has been formed to monitor the work of the Albemarle and Pamlico Estuarine Study Group, with the express pur pose of utilizing this valuable infor mation to regionally address water quality issues that impact the Albe marle-Pamlico area. Mrs. Josephine Mills Brown, 60, of 3925-D valley Court, Winston-Salem, died Thurs day, August 10, 1989. A native of Chowan County, she was the daughter of the late Annie Curran and Snowden Calvin Mills. She retired as a vice president of First Wachovia Mortgage Com pany after 25 years. Survivors include a daughter, Anna Curran Brown of Winston-Sa lem; a brother, S. Calvin "Dick" Mills, Jr. of Grafton, Va. and seve ral nieces and nephews. Applications are now being accepted by the Northeastern Historic Places Office (NEHPO) for grant funding through the 1989-90 Grants Program. The grants are offered annually by the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources to non profit historical groups in the northeastern region-NEHPO service area. Proposals should reach the NEHPO Office on or before September 13, 1989, and fund ing requests should not exceed $5,000. Proposals should con tain a narrative describing the project, the historic property, the sponsoring organizaiton, and an itemized project budget listing grant expenses.
