She was also the first black supervisor at the plant. She was one of 93 people honored during the NAACP awards held at the Fine Arts Center at ECSU on Saturday. By CATHY WILSON Staff Writer Nearly 100 African Amer icans making history in Perquimans County over the years were honored Sat urday afternoon during the Perquimans NAACP’s first Red Carpet Awards Gala held at Elizabeth City State University From being the first Af rican American to inte grate a local manufactur ing plant to being the first black mayor of Hertford, The Rev. Gilbert Vaughn speaks at the NAACP awards at the Fine Arts Center at Elizabeth City State University, as the first African Ameri can woman elected to the county board of commis sioners and the first Afri can American to serve as chairwoman. In addition to the post humous awards presented, Horace Reid was honored for being the first African American elected mayor of Hertford and Rev. Vickie J. honorees or their family members received awards and trophies in honor of their accomplishments. In addition, five people were inducted into the Per quimans County NAACP Hall of Fame.
