2 THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21,2015 MLK DAY Continued from 1 He recited King’s words from an address on under standing life’s blueprint. King gave the address in Philadel phia in October 26,1967 and urged people to make a dif ference no matter what they do. “If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed mu sic or Shakespeare wrote poetry,” Strother said, quot ing King. “He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and Earth will pause to say, ‘Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.” And the time to make a difference, Strother said, is now. “The timing is always right to do the right thing,” Strother said. The right thing, Strother said, is to cast off viewing problems as racial ones. He pointed to the front row of the church, where Perqui mans County Clerk of Court Todd Tilley, Sheriff Eric Tilley, former Perquimans County Schools board chair man Walter Leigh and Win fall Mayor Fred Yates sat. We should see four gentlemen. “In most cases, we find ourselves in a perception war,” Strother said. “Now, we are all susceptible to prejudice and how quickly people can be poisoned by misinformation and igno rance.” King was assassinated in April 1968, and the 50th anniversary of that event is drawing closer. What is clear to Strother is the work isn’t done yet. “It’s clear it’s going to take more than a lifetime for some things to change,” he said. “I leave you with my all- time favorite quote from the bravest, most brilliant, erudite the world has ever known Rev. By given that defini tion of greatness it means that everybody can be great because anyone can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your sub ject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love. You..can.be that ser vant.’” Frank Norman reflects during a service held Monday at First Baptist Missionary Church in Hertford. His son spoke at the service. CLEANUP Continued from 1 said. “It will open it up to canoes but anytime you have a obstruction like a fallen tree, it could back up the water by a few inches.” When you have dozens and dozens of trees, the problem multiplies. In Chowan, Perquimans and Pasquotank coun ties, sections of Burnt Mill Creek and the upper Perquimans River will be cleared of debris as well. Johnson said the crews doing the work have to wade into the water with chain saws to clear the wood out beside boats largely can’t get in there. Johnson said he hopes to advertise for bids in the coming days. The work is supposed to be complete by February. The Little River begins at the southern edge of the Great Dismal Swamp near Parkville, 10 miles west of Elizabeth City, and forms the Pasquotank and Per quimans County border. FINANCIAL STRESS? Gutmann said leadership was one of the most important lessons that Scouting had taught him. “You can’t beat true lead ership,” Gutmann said. Leadership skills are an asset anywhere, he said, whether at work, in clubs, in church or in the commu nity. Gutmann has served as Troop 150’s senior patrol leader. The leadership position was the toughest part of the path to Eagle, according to Gutmann. On the other hand, he never seriously considered not attaining the highest rank in Scouting. “I knew I was going to make it,” Gutmann said. In addition to his involve ment in scouting, Gutmann also is active in Open Door Church and in the Civil Air Patrol in Elizabeth City. “I love to fly,” Gutmann said. Guy Simmons, a former Edenton resident who now lives in Hertford, attended Gutmann’s Eagle Court of Honor as a representative of the Civil Air Patrol. In addition to enjoying the outdoors himself, Gut mann wants others to get the most out of outdoor op portunities, too. For instance, Gutmann’s Eagle service project was building four child-sized picnic tables at Perquimans Central School. He said he had noticed that the school’s outdoor dining area includedfull-size picnic tables but none that would be easily accessible for preschool-aged chil dren. “I wanted to do some thing for the little children,” Gutmann said. “It’s always nice to see them smile.” Pat Gutmann said she wished her daughter could have been at the Eagle Court of Honor. But she added that she knew her daughter was looking down on the ceremony and very proud and happy about her son’s accomplishment.
