PUBLIC HEARINGS ON COMMUNITY SERVICES BLOCK GRANT PROGRAM The Economic Improvement Council, Inc. will hold a Public Hearing in each of the ten counties on the continuation of funds from the NC Dept, of Health & Human Services in Raleigh, NC. The Hearings will be held during the week of November 9-13th and November 16th from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. Funds will be used to alleviate the barriers of poverty for low-income families. The 2016 Anti Poverty Plan and supportive documents may be viewed by the public at the EIC Resource Centers and the Edenton Administrative Office between 8:30am - 5:00pm daily. Once adopted, the Plan will be submitted to the Coastal Resources Commission for certification. Written objections, comments, or statements of support shall be submitted to the DCM District Planner, Charlan Owens, 1367 US Highway 17 South, Elizabeth City, NC 27909 no less than 15 business days prior to the CRC meeting at which the land use plan is scheduled to be considered for certification. Further information can be obtained by contacting the District Planner at 252-264-3901. Copies of the Land Use Plan are available for review by the public at the Perquimans County Library during normal office hours. Area Agency on Aging to hold program Nov. 5 From Staff Reports The annual family care- giver education conference will be held Nov. 5 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Kermit E. White Center in Elizabeth City. The annual event is spon sored by the Hertford-based Albemarle Commission’s Area Agency on Aging (AAA) It seeks to both honor and educate family, professional and volunteer caregivers in the community. November is National Family Caregivers Month. The conference will include topics relevant to family caregivers as well as older adults and their families. This year’s keynote ad dress: “Dementia; Types, Behaviors and Testing” will be presented by Dr. Henry Okhravi, MD. Dr. Okhravi is the Rosemary, Fenton, and Garnet Jordan Professor of Geriatrics at the Glennan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology located at East ern Virginia Medical School. Dr. Okhravi also serves as the medical director of the Memory Consultation Clinic for diagnosing and treating patients with different types of cognitive impairment. He serves as the medical direc ¬ tor for Beth Sholom Village in Virginia Beach, the prima ry teaching site for geriatric medicine. Other key topics at this year’s conference will include... * Advance Care Planning- “The Conversation We’re Not Having!” * Medications-“WiIl an other pill really help?” * A panel of local family caregivers will share stories of triumph as well as trials, and the strategies and skills that have made their care- giver roles more rewarding. Local businesses and agencies will be on hand as exhibitors. They will pro vide information on servic es and supports that may be available to the older adult and disabled population in Northeast North Carolina and their caregivers. The conference is free to family and volunteer care- givers, older adults, and other community members. Lunch is included and will be provided by Southland Catering. COA to host seniors on Nov. 18 From Staff Reports ♦ College of The Albemarle (COA) will host the “GEAR UP Senior Day” on Nov. 18. Seniors from John A. Hol mes and Perquimans High Schools will tour the Eliza beth City Campus and have an opportunity to consult with admissions staff and faculty members. Students will receive in- fonnation about admissions and financial aid, includ ing how to apply to COA; what to expect during the application, admission and enrollment process; where to go to get their questions answered and options for paying for college classes. Faculty and staff will talk to seniors about how to later transfer from COA to the university level, how to apply for career prepara tory programs, and how to choose the best mqjor/pro- gram and college. In addition, students will learn what is expected of a college student, how college is different than high school and what COA offers to help students be successful. During the COA campus tour, students will discover what the general college ex perience is like. “We are very pleased to welcome the seniors from John A.
