2 THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29,2016 Community COX HONORED CDC Continued from 1 Perquimans County Social Services office. Draper, a 61-year-old Viet nam War-era veteran and his wife bought it on-line about five years ago based on see ing it on-line. “She was from Bertie County so that’s why we moved here,” said Draper, himself a native of Maryland. Then his wife Ruth died three years ago. Draper lost his leg due to a medical condition involving a blood clot about six years ago. After a series of failed operations, he said he simply told his doctors to “do what you have to do” and the leg was amputated. Now it’s just Drainer and his 12-year-old son Jacob in the home. Three years ago Draper got a letter from River City CDC asking if he wanted to be part of the program. He did, but he wasn’t selected that year. Same thing two years ago. This year he was approved. “I am really fortunate” Draper said Wednesday. He praised the volunteers for how quickly they tackled the projects around the house. He said many seemed sur prised when he said they could eat their lunch inside the house, instead of outside in the heat. On Thursday, there were three crews there, 15 youth and six adults. Not only did the youth vol unteer their labor, they had to pay for the experience. Sharon Sicher, an adult volunteer, said it cost her group about $469 per stu dent. Sicher traveled from near Roanoke, Va. to be part of the project. The fees helped pay the cost of the materials needed for the re pairs. Divya Hopkins was there last week from Kansas. The 15-year-old was enjoying the work, but also liked when their group took a field trip to the Outer Banks. It was her first view of the ocean. “I got to see a dolphin,” she said. Volunteers replaced the rotten wood around win dows at Draper’s house and rebuilt the front porch to three times the original size. They also planned to stain and seal his wheel chair ramp in the back. They also painted the trim a lighter color. “Finally my house is de cent,” Draper said. And on Independence Day he can celebrate his birthday in a nicer home. “Yup, I’m one of those that was bom on the Fourth of July.” Draper was just one of six Perquimans County hom eowners that were helped by the program. Other homes were on Edenton Road Street, Dogwood Mobile Home Lane, South Church Street, Belvidere Road and Muddy Creek Road. Across the region a total of 62 hom eowners were helped.
