2 THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27,2017 JOLLY Continued from 1 farm was sold to a timber - farm and was lived in off ‘ and on by tenant farmers. ' After the 1950s, the house mostly sat empty. It was used as a barn for hay stor age somewhere in that time, she said. In the 1970s, the house was scheduled to be burned down by the fire depart ment for practice when it was bought and thus saved by someone from Virginia. “The fact that no one ; lived in the house for most 2 of its history was also its’ • saving grace,” she said. “When we bought the house in 1995, no one had made a lot of changes to the house to make it ‘livable’ so the 1 house was mostly in origi- ' nal condition. It also meant T-that there hadn’t been any maintenance for 150 years.” She admits others didn’t appreciate the couple’s pur chase. “Everyone thought we were crazy when we bought the house, it was so run down and the front yard was a junk yard. But it was my dream to fix up an old house and my husband Mark is an extremely talent ed wood worker. We were in our early 30s with a 2- year-old daughter. We were so young. “After we bought the house, we had to put in a new foundation, new roof, new porches and replace windows. We worked on the house for two years before we were able to move into one room. When we did, our family had grown, so we had a 4-year-old and 18- month-old, and were living in one room.” SUBMITTED PHOTO The Edmund Blount Skinner House is part of the “Jollification"event on Sept. 30. This is what it looked like when Julie Phelps and her husband Mark bought it in 1995. She said they’ve been continuously working on the house for the last 22 years. “It’s where we raised our family. It is part of our fam- uy.” Yet the house is part of the family they had to fight to keep. “Three years ago, during the tornado outbreak, our house was hit a tornado,” she said. “The roof was ripped off, the front door was blown open, a chimney was knocked off, and there was severe damage to most of the porches on the house. While we’ve repaired most of the damage, our porches haven’t been replaced. “With a house like this you can’t just go to Lowe’s and buy replacement hand- rails and columns. It’s all custom woodwork with sizes of wood that aren’t generally available. After the tornado, my husband Mark used a portable mill to mill wood from downed trees in the sizes we would need. It takes years for the wood to dry. Hopefully, the porches will be this winter’s project.” PCRA, which is putting on the Jollification event Satur day, operates the Newbold- White House and another historic property on the site on Harvey Point Road. It and three others, including the Phelps home, will be open to walk-in tours. An other six sites will be part of a drive-by tour. HURRICANE Continued from 1 When he saw multiple large donations of shrink- wrapped wooden pallets of water, bleach and food Stallings realized the dream would become a reality. “People here understand a disaster,” Stallings said. One person brought a case of nothing but tooth- brushes. The donations are now in Alva a town of about 2,200 people. It’s located in Lee County near Fort Myers. In additional to the do nations, people gave about $3,000 in cash and they "By Friday night we had to unload the trailer and reload it so we could double-stack the pallets." Michael Stallings Member, Bagley Swamp Wesleyan Church had items they still needed shipped to Stallings’ office in time to pack them on the truck. The 54-foot trailer can hold 22 pallets, but it can hold twice that much if a second layer is stacked on top of the first. “By Friday night we had to unload the trailer and re load it so we could double- stack the pallets,” Stallings Town of Hertford Board Vacancy Notice The Hertford Town Council is seeking residents of the Town of Hertford interested in serving on the Hertford Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. Spaugh also credited a couple of radio stations for doing live remote broadcasts from the site at Wal-Mart Saturday for giving a surge in late dona tions. Spaugh stresses his church played only a small part in the effort. “It wasn’t our church that did it. It took a lot of differ ent people and churches. Ninety percent of the stuff on the truck came from somewhere else,” Spaugh said referring to sources other than his church. But the church did add something special, a prayer. On Sunday, the con gregation surrounded the truck and joined hands and prayed for those in Florida who would be getting the The destination for the donations was Countryside Wesleyan Church. A coor dinator is there from the greater Wesleyan Church to help with storm recov ery. Oddly enough the same man was somebody Spaugh worked with when a Perquimans County group went to Coney Island after Hurricane Sandy. Spaugh thanks everyone involved for helping. “Saturday somebody came up and brought four or five boxes of diapers. I know a box of diapers cost $20. That was $100 that they donated. I was just surprised that random people would do that. They knew people needed it.” “We couldn’t have done it without Abby (Stallings) and Michael,” Spaugh said. Spaugh also credited Superintendent Matthew Cheeseman for quickly signing on when they asked to locate collection bins in local schools. “He said ‘sure we can do this,”’ Spaugh said. The benefits, Spaugh said, will help Perquimans County too, now and in the supplies. future. “They are going through “We’re teaching on kids hardship. A lot of us have,” that this (donating to help Spaugh said. others) is what we do.” Read more Perquimans news and feature stories online at DailyAdvance.com PUBLIC NOTICE NOTICE OF MUNICIPAL ELECTION PERQUIMANS COUNTY NORTH CAROLINA A municipal election will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 in Perquimans County for the Town of Hertford and the Town of Winfall.
