Thanksgiving
trivia
BY MICHELE LAWRENCE
Perquimans Library
It’s time for a little
Thanksgiving trivia!
LAWRENCE
According
to the Nation
al Archives,
U.S. presi
dents issued
proclama
tions each
year to deter
mine the date
for Thanks ¬
giving ^ not necessarily in
November.
President Abraham Lin
coln’s 1863 Proclamation
declared that the holiday
would be regularly celebrat
ed the last Thursday in No
vember.
When the last Thursday
in November ended up be
ing the last day of the month
in 1939, President Franklin
D. Roosevelt worried that
economic recovery would
slow due to a shortened
holiday shopping season
(remember the days when
stores began displaying
holiday items the day after
Thanksgiving? It was mag
ical!). He changed Thanks
giving to the second to last
Thursday in November but
not all states complied.
To end confusion, the
government passed a res
olution declaring Thanks
giving to be the fourth
Thursday in November
forevermore. Drop by the
library and I’ll tell you how
Thanksgiving is responsible
for TV dinners!

‘Turkey lurkers’ open doors for worthy cause
Saturday morning, “turkey lurkers” Charles Prewitt and John Christensen were on the front lines helping the
needy by accepting turkeys dropped off for the Open Door Food Pantry at Hertford United Methodist Church.
By Christensen’s estimate, Open Doors’ good work would feed at least 240 families this week with a meal
that includes a turkey and all the fixins.’
All the families that need this - we’re serving Perquimans County, the needy, to make sure they have a good
Thanksgiving meal," Christensen said. “Open Door Food Pantry distributes food year round. This is but one of
our special programs during the hdliday season. We want people to have a good holiday time - nothing better
than a good meal; get the family together.”
Jones to
file for
re-election
By Staff reports
Kyle Jones, former
chairman of the Perqui
mans Comity Board of
Commissioners now serv
ing in his second term,
announced this week that
he will file for re-election
when the period opens in
December.
C o m -
menting on
the current
group of
Commission
ers, Jones
said, “We’ve
got a really
JONES great Board.
I’ve been for
tunate to serve with men
and women that I have a lot
of respect for, and I think
our Board is a model gov
erning body in a time when
a lot of similar institutions
are not.” -
Jones, first elected in
2012 and re-elected in
2016, was at 27-years old
the youngest person ever
elected to the Board. He
noted that the Board has
changed during his ten
ure.
“When I came on I
served with Ben (Hobbs)
and Tammy (Mill
er-White), who had been
there for a long time. It’s
hard to believe that now
I’m the longest-tenured
person on the Board after
Wallace (Nelson). So now
when a big issue comes
up, more often than not, I
find myself helping guide
the debate. I just think it’s
what your senior-mem
bers do.”
Jones has worked as an
Assistant District Attor
ney in the First Judicial
District since 2013, and
dabbles in real estate busi
ness.
“My prosecutor job is
completely separate from
my role as a Commission
er,” he said. “I’ve gotten a
reputation as someone who
is fair and reasonable in the
courtroom, and I think the
people I’ve served with in
