A2 THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24,2022 Toys for Tots hopes to aid 555, to offer 14 drop-off sites Deadline for donating toys for annual campaign is Dec. 9 BY TYLER NEWMAN Chowan Herald Like clockwork each holiday season, Toys for Tots makes Christmas morning something special for millions of children in the U.S. This year, Toys for Tots donations plans to help 555 children in Perquim ans and Chowan counties have a brighter Christmas morning. To help ensure that hap pens, toy donations will be accepted up until Dec. 9 at five sites in Perquimans County and nine locations in Chowan County. The locations in Perqui mans include: • Sheriff’s Office at 110 North Church Street • A&L Garage at 302 Dobbs Street • Woodard’s Pharmacy at 101 North Church Street • N.C. Farm Bureau at 707 South Church Street • NC State Employee’s. Credit Union at 142 Ocean Highway South. The locations in Chow an are as follows: • Sheriff’s Office at 305 West Freemason Street • Links at Mulberry Hill at 1101 West Sound Shore Drive • Time Finance at 703 Luke Street • Governor’s Pub at 321 South Broad Street • Southern Bank at 101 West Queen Street • Walgreens at 717 North Broad Street • N.C. Farm Bureau at 524 Virginia Road • NC State Employee’s Credit Union at 101 Mexi co Road • Chowan/Perquimans Smart Start at 409 Old Hertford Road. Both Christmas parades in Hertford and Edenton next weekend will also fea ture a “stuff the patrol car” event for the Toys for Tots campaign. The sheriff’s offices in Perquimans and Chowan have more infor mation about those events. “The Perquimans Sher iff Department also has a school competition going on that is collecting toys. I heard that one principal will shave his head if they win,” said Sarah Williams, organizer for the local Toys for Tots drive. Another local event to help the toy drive will be the Governor’s Pub golf tournament, which has raised money and toy do nations for Toys for Tots in the past. Contact the restaurant at 252482-7655 or the Links at Mulberry Hill at 252-482-3606 for more information on how to register. Volunteers are also need ed for the week of toy dis tribution. Volunteers are needed on Friday, Dec. 9 for toy pickup as well as the week of Dec. 12-16 when toys are unloaded and dis tributed. Monday, Dec. 12, is expected to be the busi est day, Williams said. “We will be providing toys for 555 children this year and hope that the communities are generous again this year,” she said. Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive kicked off Saturday Hertford Food Lion SA’s Perquimans bell-ringing site From staff reports The Salvation Army kettle drive for the Christmas holi day season officially kicked off Saturday. A few kettles have already been set up on a limited basis at a few sites, but Saturday marked the start of the drive in earnest. Bell ringers will be on hand FRIDAY Shop Local Downtown Hertford businesses will participating in a “Shop Local” event on Nov. 26 by offering special sales. SATURDAY Holiday Gift Shop The Perquimans County Restoration Association is opening its Holiday Gift Shop on Saturdays in November. It also will be open on Saturday, Dec. 3 and Dec. 10 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. DEC. 2 Grand Illumination Historic Hertford will sponsor Hertford’s Grand Illumination, which includes the turning on of the town’s downtown Christmas lights, at 6 p.m. The event will also feature curbside festivities, music and entertainment. DEC. 3 every day except Sunday, ac cording to Toni Sawyer, who is director of community de velopment and relations for the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army is still looking for groups or indi viduals to volunteer for bell ringing. Groups or individuals in terested in helping with bell ringing can call Mgjor Jason Hughes at 3384129. Hughes said last year’s drive raised $135,000, and sights are set on raising that Perquimans Out & About DEATHS begin at Perquimans County High School at 2 p.m. and proceed downtown. Mrs. Claus Loves Dogs A Mrs. Claus Loves Dogs event featuring photos with Mrs. Santa Claus will be held on the Perquimans County Courthouse lawn from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Santa will meet with kids on the lawn starting at 3:30 p.m. Craft Fair and 5K A Christmas Craft Fair and 5K run organized by the Dance Company of Hertford will be held at Perquimans High School from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Event will feature artisan holiday crafts, food and kids activities. The 5K Rhythm Run kicks off at 9 a.m. Contact: 252-312- 2595. Christmas Bazaar A Christmas Bazaar will be held at Perquimans County High School from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. amount again this year. The need in the communi ty has increased over the past year, he said, and inflation also is impacting donors.
