District Federation of Music Clubs Holds Annual Meet at Cooleemee Mrs. Charles Hassel, State President, Is Guest Speaker The Southern District of the North Carolina Federation of Music Clubs held its annual fall meetfhg at the Cooleemee Meth odist Church, Saturday, October 26. Mrs. C C. Duncan, District Director, presided, and Mrs. Bax ter Young was acting secretary. The roll was called, and the clubs of the district gave their reports for the past year of the work they had accomplished. Several musical selections were presented by the members of the district, and a presentation was made by a group of male singers from Catawba College, directed by Professor Harry Taylor. The highlight of the meeting was an address by Mrs. Charles Hassell, State President. She urged all members be imbued with the ideal of service and to increase their knowledge of all music. A luncheon was served while Mrs. Thomas Zachary of Salis bury played conversational mu sic. Mrs. C. C. Duncan was re elected District Director, and an invitation from the Hickory Mu sic Clubs was extended for the next district meeting. Moore, who had charge of the luncheon, was also complimented for her fine work. C. f NOVEMBER, 1946 Sconien Hold Annul Heeling Scout leaders for the Davie District, Uwharrie Council, held their annual meeting on October 17 at the Cooleemee Methodist Church. Chairman Grady Ward presided. The meeting was opened by Mr. I. H. Huske who led the group in singing "America." The invocation was rendered by Mr. Jenkins. Chairman Ward praised the ladies of the church, and Mr. Huske, for the fine job they had done in preparing for the meet ing. He also praised the District Committee, the Unit Leaders and the sponsoring institution for the fine job they had done during the year. The financial report was give# by Mr. Robert McNeil. He ex- Parent-Teacher Association Stages Successful Halloween Carnival Nearly 800 People )oin in the Fun Halloween was celebrated at a gay carnival attended by nearly 800 people in the Cooleemee Public School. The budget and finance committee reported gross receipts of approximately $750.00 raised for the needs of the school. Hayden Stiller, master of cere-« monies, enlivened the evening for all present with his wit and humor. In the popularity contest for babies Betty Jean Spillman and Michael Daniels won first place and received a fur muff and foot ball, respectively, as prizes. Janie Freeman and Jack Riddle of the 11th grade won out as queen and king in a closely contested and spirited balloting. They were crowned by C. N. Spry, imme diate past president of the PTA. Circulation 1200 I On Saturday afternoon, Octo ber 26, The Lottie Walters Music Club held a special meeting at the home of Mrs. J. L. James, With the club President, Peggy Brinegar, presiding, the meeting opened with the singing of the Junior Hymn, repeating the Pledge and the singing of the Junior Collect. Peggy Brinegar welcomed the guests, after which Margaret Skinner, Club Coun selor, introduced the guest speak er, Mrs. James A. Brady of Statesville, State Junior Counsel or of the North Carolina Federa tion of Music Clubs, who earlier in the day attended the Southern District meeting of the Senior Clubs held in Cooleemee. The Juniors were honored to have Mrs. Brady as their guest, who brought to them a very in spiring and beneficial message on a subject of importance to all Juniors, "The Junior Work as Outlined by a National Coun selor." There are many projects to be accomplished during the year, as outlined on the Junior Club rating sheet, and Mrs. Brady stressed the importance of all clubs striving to attain the National Honor Roll, and have North Carolina lead the Nation again this year as last year for having the highest number of National Honor Roll Clubs. To the Junior Club in each District of the State making the highest number of points by rating sheets, which means the club doing the most worthwhile work, an award will be given this year. The value of subscribing to the National Junior Magazine was also stressed for "a good member is an informed member." In conclu sion Mrs. Brady said that there are over one hundred Junior Clubs in North Carolina, all do ing fine and enthusiastic work, and urged the members to so work that they may always be able to say, "I promise to do all (Continued on page 2)
