State Univ. 93 Winston Salem State Univ. 91 GREENSBORO - Willie Daniels is a winner! From high school to college, he’s carried institutions to winning records. He led the Eastern High Ramblers of Washington, D.C. to a 23-4 mark and the city prep championship, an undefeated league record, and earned 1st team All-Metropolitan honors while averaging 22 points per contest as a senior. Then the college offers poured in from such schools as the University of Maryland and St. Bonaven- ture; however Willie chose North Carolina A&T. Daniels career hasn’t been without personal ups and downs. As a performer on A&T’s freshman squad in ,1970-71, Willie was plagued by an ankle injury that sidelined him during the season. Along with this came the frustration of not playing and an ensuing lack of interest in classes. He lost his sense of identity and decided not to return to A&T next fall. “Cal Irvin and Nat Frazier (Morgan State Coach) recommended that 1 go to Seminole Junior College in Oaklahoma," said Daniels. There he transformed a team that had been 14-19 the previous season into a club that went 30-5 and reached the Junior College Nationals. Averaging better than 14 points per game, Willie was named honorable mention JC All-American. Last year Willie Daniels returned to A&T, inspite of offers from the University of South Florida and Marquette. He said he came back because "I felt there was no place else to go. It was the sense of pride that 1 had to return and prove myself.” And he did that quickly, breaking into the starting lineup when A&T center Artice Jackson injured his knee in the fifth game of the season. Although he shared playing time with several veteran .forwards, he averaged 13.6 points and 6.3 rebounds. And the winning ways followed, with A&T taking their second straight Mid- East.ern Athletic Confer ence Tournament cham pionship over Howard University and the Univer sity of Maryland Eastern Shore. His quickness and leap ing ability on the boards earned him the name ■‘Doctor D” and a place on the All-Tournament Second Team. With superb shooters like guards Allen Spruill and All-American Candi date James Outlaw (pre sently averaging 28 points per game) on the team, Willie might wonder where this leaves him this season. “Rebounding,” he said in calling his task ”a must.” He has therefore learned to sacrifice one part of his game for a team accomplishment as eviden ced by his 11.5 retrieves per game. He still manages to pump in 15.2 points per game. Willie’s unselfishness has led him to the summer playgrounds in Washington to work with the D.C. Recreation Department’s Leader Program. And the summer league basketball he played resulted in two championships for his team while he came up against the likes of Sid Catlett, formerly of Notre Dame and Darrell Brown and Jim O’Brien, both ex-Maryland players. Since the Aggies are the only MEAC tournament champions, winning two in the brief history of the league, Willie says, ‘‘1 don’t want to be the first team captain to lose a MEAC championship.” Certainly head coach Warren Reynolds doesn’t expect “Doctor D” to let him down as Daniels operates magically and consistently DEMDVES COINS AND CALLUSES j( Broncas Looking Ahead FAYETTEVILLE —When you are defending CIAA champs everybody is gunning for you.
