PATRONIZE YOUR ADVERTISERS Continued from Page 1 During the commission ing ceremony, media re presentative interest cen tered on the keynote address by Representative Barbara Jordan of Houston, Texas, (Dorie Miller was from Waco, Texas), and the “run on” of the ship’s crew. This dramatic tradi tional method of manning a new ship received heavy photographic coverage. An analysis of media comment reveals on over whelming amount of copy favorable to the Navy. Many articles led with “First U.S. Navy ship named for a Black enlisted man.” The Texas papers led with qiiotes from Representative Jordan’s speech or focused on Mrs. Miller, Dorie’s mother, who was also present for the ceremony. That bothered some of the reporters present who wanted to know why a Black officer was not in command of the ship. Secretary Johnson answer ed that, “while progress in this direction has to be speeded up, the Navy does not intend to engage in reverse racism.” The following account appeared in the Grand Rapids (Michigan) Times, whose publisher was a- mong Miller guests. The headline read, “Black News Media Say Thanks to Navy.” The writer conti nues, “Many thanks to the Navy for its giant step forward in commissioning the USS Miller in honor of Dorie Miller.
