Bonita Chavis, A Rising Star In Music

Renaye Carr, 20, a sophomore social welfare major at
Livingstone College, Salisbury, N.C. appears to be
ready to head for a fishing expedition at the nearest
“fishing hole” near land locked Salisbury. However,
she needs a male companion to help her maneuver her
boat
Valire, a 1973 graduate of Salisbury high school and a
member of the Livingstone Social Welfare Action
Group (S.W.A.G.), is the daughter of Mrs. Ena Mae
Carr of 1326 Standish Street.

best be recognized by his
audience. So let it be known
that Miss Bonita Chavis has
had a successful perform
ing career while at Bennett
College. The talented
singer and pianist present
ed her last musical recital
last week at the women’s
college.
A senior Music Educa
tion student, Bonita per
formed before a nice'crowd
of students, friends, well-
wishers, and family. Since
coming to Bennett four
years ago, she has built up
a great following in the
Greensboro area and they
turned out in full force to
witness her last major
performance at the college.
She presented such num
bers as “Agnus Dei” by
Handel, “Czardus” by
Strauss, “Summertime” by
Gershwin, and “Stan Still
Jordan” by Burleigh.

The National Alumnae
Association will hold elec
tions and business sessions
on alumnae development
on Saturday morning. May
10 in Pfeiffer Hall Assem
bly.
Over five-hundred guests
are expected to attend the
traditional All-Bennett
Luncheon at 1 p.m. During
this affair, chapter repre
sentatives announce their
annual contributions to the
college Loyalty Fund.
The evening activities
will include the College
Choir Concert in Pfeiffer
Chapel and the Alumnae
Breakfast Dance at the
Royal Villa Inn.
The Baccalaureate-
Commencement exercise
will be held on Sunday
afternoon. May 11 at 4 p.m.
on the campus quadrangle.
The guest speaker is Ms.
Ehtel Payne, journalist for
the Chicago Defender. The
President’s reception will
be held immediately after
the service.
Then before going into
the intermission, the talent
ed artist, replaced her
accompanist on the piano
and played Brahm’s “Inter
mezzo, Op. 118, No. 1
which attested to her
musical versatility. Later in
the program she teamed up
with Miss Joyce Bass, a
freshman Journalism stu
dent, to present Act I of
“The Marriage of Figaro”
by Mozart.
Bonita, third in a family
of ten children, is well
known by Bennett College
friends and in the Western
North Carolina United
Methodist Conference. She
has performed at numerous
banquets, . talent shows,
and concerts throughout
the east coast.
“Her own rendition of
Roberta Flack’s “First
Time Ever 1 Saw Your
Face” really captivated
guests at a recent Bennett
alumnae gathering,” ex
claimed Mrs. Ellease R.
Browning, director of
alumnae affairs.
"She sings a wide
repertoire of musical selec
tions for secular to
spirituals, from pop to
opera.”
An honor student, Bonita
was recently selected to
Who’s Who in American
Colleges and Universities.
She has been the recipient
of several major scholar
ship awards from commu
nity organizations based on
musical talents and scho
larship. She serves as
president of the college’s
chapter of the Music
Education National Asso
ciation and is a member of
the college choirs and the
band. She attended North
east Senior High School in
Guilford County.
What are her plans after
graduating from Bennett?
Bonita anticipates doing
graduate study in Music at
(he University of Florida or
University of Iowa. This
summer she will be
performing at Nashville’s
Opryland with other talent
ed youth from across the
country.
The Chavis family is
certainly not a stranger to
the Bennett Community.
Bonita is one of three
Chavises currently enrolled
at the college and the
aluniane office reports that
several have already gra
duated.
Bonita Chavis is a
beautiful person and she is
going places - not as a
carbon copy of Roberta
Flack, Aretha Franklin, or
Nancy Wilson, but as Miss
Bonita Chavis, a great
performer in her own right. -
doing her own thing.
SALISBURY - TIME OUT from the

emanating from the smile of Polly Nivens
Manning seems to be saying as she
relaxes from her assignments as a staff
writer on a leading North Carolina
weekly.
A 1970 graduate of Bowman High
School, Wadesboro, N.C.. Mrs. Manning
is also a 1974 graduate of Livingstone
College at Salisbury, N.C. An English
major at Livingstone, Mrs. Manning was
a member of the Julia B. Duncan Players
(drama group), the Marching Band and
the Prayer Meeting Choir.
She is the daughter of Mrs. Goldie M.
Nivens of 1122'/2 Old Charlotte Road and
the wife of Abram Manning, senior
quarterback of the Livingstone College
