Cooperative Selling Helps Hog Production Eastern North Carolina farmers have sold $1,500,000 worth oi hogs through their local ccoperative mar ketlng associations since January 1, 1937, said H. \V. Taylor, of State' College. The 85.000 hogs soil In this way| were shipped direct to the packers.' wo pay prevailing prices fov the high (juaVi'y pork obtained frpm most of the hogs. Although packers nvado deductions for soft and oily perk, Taylor a'Uded. giawera have lost comparatively little bjtcause most, of the- hogs were in good con 6* lion. The cooperative marketing program sponsored by the State College extension service is designed not cnly to help growers sell their hogs to advantage, but also to encourage them to prd:|uco high quality hogs. A>t the Erst of the year 1937, two cooperatively hog markets were .func floating In Eastern Carolina. Growers were so pleased with the results that they have organised 13 more assocla' tens cjlnce that .time. I The ewtenskxn swine specialist and county farm agents assist growers In organizing and operating an association, but the farmers themselves control its policies, Taylor stated. i Local men have been trained to grade bogs on a basis of their general quality, arid arsangemcnts have been made with the U. S. Bureau of Anfnial Industry 'to provide federal graders to determine whether the pork Is hard, soft or oily. Swine cannot be graded for soft or c'ly pork until slaughtered and cooled. Therefore, this work must be wane at the packing houses, where the federal graders will be placed as: scon as men have been trained to grade accurately.
