No Authority To "Fix" Driver's License Konald Hocutt. director of the North Carolina Highway Safety Division. said ibis week that he would ilke to make it clear to all North Carolina drivers' that he liaa an more authority to 'fix' a license r?H : '"Its untaxing bo? many people try to gel me to help them o'tt" when their driver's license has been i evoked for drunken 'driving or ronte other revocable violation," he raid. "Hurdly ta day goes zv buthat some person comes to me p"tHonully or tries to reach he through aome mutual friend in an at temp', to get me to shorten the term of a license revocation, or to lift It completely. "As a matter of fact. I have abso lutely no authority to do anything in connection with revocations out aide of routine administration ot the terms of the drver's license act ol 1935. Under that law. when a dri ver is convicted of auy one of several offenses, including druhken drt ving and hit-and-run, the court Is re oulred to take up his license and for ward it to the Highway Safety Division, which in turn is required to send the convcted party a notice that his license has been revoked and to hold the license until the revocation- period has expired. The division's function is one of routine administrative procedure," and the director can do nothing to .help a person who has been vonvicted of a revocable offense. Bven the Governor. who has the power to pardon or piirole State prisoners, has noauthority to restore a revoked driver's license until the revocation pe . - riod has unt out." QUICK RE6ULT8 ?
