Craig The entertaining committee of the Country Club entertained the club membership at an Open House and dance celebrating the old year out and welcoming the New Year with wit, humor, and a round of fun by ?ntangiing the couples on the dance floor, who were bedecked with min iature paper hats, ringing toy noise makers, with yards of colorful paper rolls and garba of confetti to con clude an evening of sheer enjoyment with resolutions in mind to get back on the Job of f&cing life's problems with stronger determination to do better, be better and help the fel Jowman in like manner. The guests wer* greeted in the lounge by Mr. P*ul NeLeler, the new president and Mrs. Neisler, assisted by members of the ohi board of di rectors and their wives and the new board With their wives. Throughout the evening fruit pun ch, open faced sandwiches, <ookle9 and chocolate covered mints were served from a long table, bank ??d with greenery, red berries, red *nd white lighted tapers. Around ten o'clock another larg<" table with an artistic, festive setting ) Interspersed with righted red and white candles, cast a mellow glow) ?*er a delectable, attractively ar ranged buffet spread, with platters cf sliced turkey, ham, potato salad, I *:arlic cheese and pimento cheese spreads with crackers, potato chips, olives, pickles, celery, hot rolls and1 coffee served from an electric urn conveniently arranged on an ap pointed side table. An ou: of-town orchestra furnish ed appealing music from 9 until 12 o'clock, dancing was enjoyed throu ? ?hout the latter part of the evening. Her performance at Winthrop will be the sixth of eight concerts offer- j ed for the 1948-49 season at the Sou th Carolina college for women. "Born in West Virginia, Miss Ste ber was taught singing first 'by her mother, also a soprano. Deciding upon singing as a career, she went to Boston to study at the New Eng land conservatory. It was in Boston that she saw her first opera, and la ter made her operatic debut at the Boston Opera house: Winning the "Metropolitan Audi tions of the Air" in 1940 resulted in a Metropolitan contract, and today she is a leading soprano of the com pany with 10 major roles in her re pertoire. Miss Steber has triumphed also in ihe concert and radio fileds, appear , ing with leading conductors, includ ing Bruno Walter, Toscanini, Serge Loussevitzky, Stokowski, Mitropou los, Orman.'y and < '.iters. At her Winthrop concert,.
