Foods Youths To Compete : In Garden Contest I North Carolina boys and girls will have an opportunity again this year i to compete in the annual production I marketing contest of the National I Junior Vegetable Growers Associa tion, according to H. M. Covington, horticulturist for the State College Extension Service. A total of $6,000 in cash prizes and agricultural scholarships will be awarded to some 200 state, sec tional, regional, and national win ners. Tbe funds are being provided by the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, and every boy and girl in the United States who has an interest in growing vegetables is eli gible to compete. The top award of $500 will go to . the individual chosen the country's National Junior Vegetable Growing Champion. Top regional prizes of $200 each will be awarded to win- ? ners in each of the four regions, nor theast, south, central, and west. Thirty-three sectional prizes of $100 each will be distributed, plus state a>v<*rds in each participating state. The program is divided into two phases. First, a production project is required, and the garden thta is planned for 4-H Club or FFA work may be used. It involves a careful plan of work plus records of cost, production, incorrie, and how -and where various operations were car-, ried out. Second, a marketing study course is provided. This will supply each individual with knowledge of , the best production areas, conditions that control quality in vegetables, and the various grades and packa ges used in selling crops, as well as ! various types of wholesale and re tail outlets.
