Te3m records of the 1949 Central
high boys and girls basketball
teams are printed above for the ben
efit of the statistics- minded cage
fans.
Although they don't always tell
the whole story, statistics have a
way of creeping into all sports ac
tivities. Its not that sports writers
canH dig up anything to write about,
not always, that Is. The figures can
tell a big story.
High indhSiual averages should
not reflect the 'itory away from
"the team" picture. Bob Kimmell
hit only one field foal during the

10 114 72 138 14 300
season, but that 2-pointer could pro
bably be classed as (lie "best goal."
It aided in downing Shelby here by
a score of 36-35.
Looking at the statistics, Mauney
was tops in scoring for the boys with
169 points in 12 games for 1 14.1
points per game. Barnette was high
for the girls with 118 in 10 games,
or 11.8 points per fray.
The boys averaged 40.8 points for
12 games. They scored 489 points,
194 field goals and 101 free throws.
The girls hit 111 field goals and 64
charity tosses for a total of 286
points in 10 games, an average of
28 j6 points per game.
In the free throw department,
where games and titles are often
won or lost, the boys team had" to
take 223 free shots from their kind
hearted opponents in order to even
the score. Kings Mountain gave 186
free shots to opponents, but ipade
only 101 of their 223 to gain a slight
edge as their foes made good on 84
of their 186 shots. The boys were
