Two-thirds of the nation's oil
wells are stripper wells (those
from which only a relatively
small amount of oil is pumped
per day). They account for one
fifth of the country's crude pro
duction.
If all the wells drilled in the
search for oil and gas in the U. S.
in the last eight years were laid
end to end, they would reach all
the way through the earth and
out into space more than half
way to the moon.
