"The physician, who declined use of his name, said that the operation was the first to bp per formed successfully at Watts and the second to bo tried at the Insti tution. "He explained that the woman Mrs. Sarah Cates of Durham, was under anesthesia In readiness for a gall bladdor operation about 10 <l?iys ago when the heart beat stopped. "The anestheist caught it right away -- she was checking the pulse at the time. She told me immediately that there was a cardiac arrest. So I listened to her chest with a stethoscope and confirmed the fact that her heart had stopped beating. This is a situation we always regard with alarm. I Went into her chest be tween her ribs, with a knife. I was able to insert my hand in her chest and I started to mas sage the heart which was com pletely lifeless. "Something like 30 'seconds la ter, the hour! started, I contlnu Masa?jas Heart Back To Life ed thd massage for two or three minutes. She was already receiv ing a drug in her vein so when the heat started it continued on. We waited a few minutes, may be eight or 10, to determine it would not falter? time Is of -es sence. Then we felt fairly cer tain we had made It. If you don't get. the heart started in not long er than five minutes, you get so much brain damage that If the patient does recover, he Is like a vegetable, no animation. Some times they don't regain consci ousness and die within months." "The surgeon disclosed that be tween 36 and 48 hours after the delicate operation, Mrs. Cates re gained complete consciousness and was discharged from the hos pital on her ninth day. The gall bladder operation was postponed. The woman Is now back at the hospital for another check-up, he added. "When asked if- M,rs. Cates had anything to say after being told ?she was brought back to life, the physician laughed. "Yes, she did. She told us she had always trust ed In the Lord, feeling he would take care of her. I told her that He certainly had something to do with it this time."
