The rites which were performed at 11:<)0 a. m. included: presenta tion of Carpenter to the Sacred Order of Deacons by Rev. Joseph VV. O'Brien, the message which was delivered by the Rev.. Dr. Arnold Nash, chairman of the" Department of Religion at. the University of North Carolina, fending. of the litany by The Rev; I. ITarding Hughs, and reading of the Epistle by Rev. Peter Robin son. Carpenter is a graduate of Wof? foul college where he was award ed the A. 8. degree, and of the Divinity School in DuKe Universi ty from which he received the B. D. degree. Subsequent to his work at Duke, he studied at the General Theological Seminary and at Co lumbia University in New York City. After ordination. Carpenter will serve as minister at St. Bartholo mew's Church in PittsHoro. N. C. Shortly after the first of the year, he expects to go into the Chaplaincy of the United States Army. Rites Monday For Mrs. Plylez Funeral services for Mrs. Cora Hartsoe Phyler, J>5, who died in Kings Mountain hospital at noon Monday, were conducted Wednes day afternoon at 4 p. m. from First Wesleyan Methodist Church. The pastor, the Rev. J. W. Phil lips. was assisted by the Rev. C. A. Hendricks of Gastopia and the Rev. Manor Conner of Cherry vine. Interment was in Mountain Rest cemetery. Surviving are her mother. Mrs. Lily Cashion Hartsoe; three sly ters. Mrs. Grace Hullender of Kings Mountain. Mrs. W. M* Mau ney of Gastonia. and Mrs. C. L. Mayhew of Cherryville; and three brothers. Thomas W. Hartsoe. William G. Hartsoe and Gus B. Jack Phillips, officUt Blow Lead, Bow 7-5 To Cherryville ' * 0 ' ^v'-* A mlsplayed, easy outfield fly cost the Kings Mountain Juniors Tuesday night as Coach Murray Greason's Cherryville nine won a possible victory at Cherryville by 7 to 5 to draw a split with Coach Jack Sink's crew in the two game, first round series. With two out and the bases loaded, Ray Mauney, former Kings Mountain Junior baseball player, hit a fly to rightfield and three runs came in to tie the score. Carrol Lackey singled In the winning run and starter Billy Wells came out, Lefty Albert An derson replacing. Bob Turner sin gled off Anderson to tally an insurance run before Clyde Falls threw a runner out at first for the final CherryvlHe out. Kings Mountain jumped off to a god start with three inns off Fred Kiser, another former Kings Mountain junior player, in the first Inning. Jimmy Matthews and Junior Daniels walked to lead off. Don McCarter singled, Mat thews scoring. The Cherryville catcher encored a fourth ball and Daniels and McCarter both came in. In the sixth, Kings Mountain got two more. Falls singled and took second on a sacrifice hit by Wells. Matthews singled, Falls a good start with three runs off scored on a passed ball and Mat thews scored on an error by the shortstop. Cherryville got two in the bot tom of the sixth. Wells hit the leadoff batter and Don Alexan der singled. Matthews scooped up a hot liner by Don Salne, another former Kings Mountain junior player, tagged third and threw to first for a double play. Gene Smith was safe on an error by the second baseman and Alexander scored when the catcher threw to second on a steal, Falls getting the ball back to the plate wild. Wells walked the next man and Kiser doubled to push Smith In. In the fatal eighth, Salne led off with a single, Smith singled and Llneberger walked. Mat thews forced n runner at home on a grounder and Harris forced a nother at the plate on a fielders choice to set up the Mauney ?'triple". . v. ' ? : ? ' . Kings Mountain pulled off three additional double plays, one a triple play but one man was already out when the play start In the first, Falls took^?"hot liner and doubled a man off first. In the second with the bases loaded and one out. Wells took a roller, forced a man at home, McCarter completing the twin killing at first. In the third the classy Kings Mountain infield reeled off the triple play. With one out and men on second and third, Daniels took a hopper, tossed the batter out at first. Harris threw to se cond to get the man coming back to that base and Umpire O' C Conner hesitated, Falls throwing the third base runner out at home. Mai thews led the hitting with two for two. Jaycees are hosts to Burlington and Park Grace visits Ktwanis in Friday's games, with Park Grace at Jaycees and Burlington at Ktwanls on Tuesday. - In action last Friday, Klwanta downed Pheolx's Burlington crew 14 to 12 In a slugfest and Park Grace tripped Jaycees 5-2. Freddie Hambtight had a homer and Randy Cash had two hits and Richard McDanlel, Vlck Smith, Johnny McGinnls and Johnny Hardin each had a bing le Bud Conner and Childers had two hits each to pace the losers, with Tlgnor and Grant getting jone each.
