Prayer meeting 7:30 p. m. Grazing Necessary For Beef Growing Supplementary grazing for beef cattle is important. It can mean a lot of money to the far mer. D. D. Robinson, assistant Madi son County farm agent lor the Extension Service, says one far mer can prove the worth of this extra grazing for beef cattle. Zeno Ponder, says ' Robinson, figures the value of his supple mentary grazing this way: On March 12 Ponder turned 30 head of 500- pound beef calves on 25 acres of barley. The barley, seeded last fall from seed grown on the farm, cost Ponder $30, about $9 for gas and $21 for la bor. After turning the calves out on the pasture, Ponder stopped feeding 600 pounds of silage per day, and was able to trim the hay diet to 600 pounds per day. Figuring hay' at $32 per ton, thef saving amounted to $9 per day. SUages sells at about $15 per ton, and Ponder saved $4.50 per day' on this regular part of the beef cattle diet. This brought the dally saving to $14.10. Ponder turned 20 more head of cattle on the barley April 1. Fig uring the savings the same way, he estimates the additional daily saving at $f? 40 total savings, with the, first herd of 30 calves graz ing 35 days and the second herd of 20 grazipg 15 days, Ponder figures amounted to $634.50. This isn't all of the saving, however. Ponder grazed 55 ewes on the barley during January and Feb ruary, and his livestock will graze It until it is completely gone. Another good result of the supplemental grazing, Robinson says, is that the cattle gained considerable weight while on the barley, they were only holding their own In the feed lot. 6lwmieaf Gfr.
