If possible, talk with someone Who is familiar with your con templated swimming area. Obey any warning signs posted in the area. 2. Investigate unfamiliar water before diving into it. For safe diving, water should be at least 8 feet in depth. 3. Be sure that you know the limits of your swimming ability and do not exceed them. Remem ber you have to swim back. 4. Never swim alone in unpro tected waters. The buddy system is double insurance against drow ning. but don't endanger your buddy by being foolhardy. 5. Never race another swimmer 'toward open water. Swim paral lel with, or toward the shore. 6.- Don't go overboard to rescue another person unless you are an ex per; swimmer and know water rescue techniques. Use a boat, raft, life preserver, rope or pole for rescue work if at all possible. 7. Never take chances when boating. Be sure that you know how to handle your craft safely. Don't overlook wind, tide and current. Remember, it's your life that ?s in your hands when you swim in unprotected waters. In developing a new strain of \cala cotton. New Conditions Veterans applying for GI loans Joday are confronted with diffe rent conditions and requirements irom those which prevailed only a few' Weeks ago. In response to many inquiries, VA explained the two main chan ges affecting veterans are: 1. The maximum allowable in terest rate on GI loans guaran teed by VA has been raised to 4l,i percent from 4 percent effec tive May 5, 1953. 2. Credit restrictions on GI home loans have been removed, making it permissible for veter ans to obtain such loans with no down payment and with a repay ment term up to 30 years at the discretion of t*?e lenders. In addition, veterans who now plan to seek GI loans from pri vate lenders for homes, farms or businesses should apply to VA regional offices In advance for certificates of eligibility. VA emphasize * that the new 4^ percent inter t rate will ap ply only to loans closed on or after May 5, 1953. The new rul ing does not affect the rights of any veteran who has a firm com mitment from a lender to make a loan at a lower rate. All loans closed prior to May 5, 1953 will be continued at the 4 percent rate under which they were negotlat ed. VA explained that even though the law now permits GI loans With no down payment, veterans seeking loans are apt to find that many lenders will require down payments in varying amounts or percentages. Prior to the action removing Controls on April 23, 1953, veterans were required to pay at least 5 percent down In most cases and the maximum loan usually was restricted to 20 or 25 years. Va said if veterans apply in ad vance for certificates oi* eligibili ty for GI loans, It will reduce de lays in processing the loan appli cations later, when the veteran Is anxiously awaiting completion of the deal or Is pressed for time to close the loan. Certificates of eligibility are the means by which VA certifies as to the eligibility of veterans for GI loahs. QUESTION ? I understand that under the Korean GI Bill night law .ourses are counted as part-tlnv training, and may not be m?a^ured as more than three quarte.-es time. Are there any ex-, ceptlons? ANSWER ? Yes.. Here is another opinion. According to the population of Kings Mountain, it is fortunate that we have three theatres in town. The majority of the towns of this size have only one. I find if I don't care about one picture I have a choice of another. Speak ing about the price of admission, have you heard that at the "Dixie", two thin dimes will get an adult in to see a first class movie? Why grumble at admis sion prices at one theatre, when you can walk one block either way and see a movie that is cheaper. As for driving out of. town, the gas you spend plus ad mission, at the best theatres In Gastonia or Shelby, will cost you fifty cents or more. My congratulations goes to the new theatre owners. May they have success in their business. At least they made it possible, If I can't afford fifty cents, to go down the street for only twenty Cents. It is also saving me from buying an alr-condltioner for my home, because it's cool at the "Dixie". Oh yes. if the popcorn was measured, I believe the lady of last week's letter, would find that the ten cents boxes holds as much as the ten cents bags. Again congratulations to the new theatre owners. They have my cooperation. A Citizen Of Route 2 ? Kings Mountain, N. C.
