Wade Vaughn Misses Perfect Game As Grover Wins Softball Tourney One Out Away Fiom No-Hit Contest When Catcher Blackwood Singles ? _ ; ? ? ? ? Wade Vaughn pitched Grover's Minette Mills softball team to the Mid-Western District Tournament championship at City Stadium last Saturday night as the Grover ace missed a no-hitter when the Shelby Mills catcher, Willard Blackwood, singled with two men down In the last inning. Score was 10 to 0. Vaughn got plenty of good iielding support from his Grover mates as he posted his fourth tournament victory and his third in as many nights. Grover defeated Lenoir 12-1 in the quarter-finals Thursday night and dropped Mt. Holly in the semi-finals Friday night 7-0 with Vaughn doing the hurling. Grover will shift to the annual state Boftball tourney at Canton on Monday, meeting the South Piedmont district winner at 9 p. m. in a first-round game. Dallas won the consolation game and third place in the Sat urday night opener as Bo Davis let Mt. Holly down with only two hits and a 4-0 whitewashing. Davis retired the side in order the first four innings, allowed hits in the fifth and sixth frames but got out oi 'trouble. He put Mt. Holly down i-2-3 In the final stan za. The winners got an unearned tally in the second and Dennis Franklin homered to lead off a three- sun effort in the sixth th?:t nailed the win down. Davis's neat pitching effor, warmed up the large crowd for | the championship tussle and Vaughn's no-hit bid. The Grover chunker retired the Shelby side in order in the first four frames and had two down In the fifth when he walked First Baseman Manly Runyans. Vau ghn struck out the next hitter for the third out as the tension in the crowcH began to mount. Vaughn got the lead-off hitter in the sixth on a grounder and Left Fielder Dean McCraw raced in on a short blow by Grant "Hoss" Duncan. Shelby pitcher, to make a great catch. Vaughn took a pop up to retire the side in order. In the seventh, Third Baseman Andy Cockrell took a foul fly for the first out and Center Fielder Gene Turner took a short liner on his shoetops for the second.
