Study Club Met Tuesday
With Mrs. L A. Hoke
Mr. L. E. Abbott, an executive
of the First National Bank was
guest speaker Tuesday night at
the meeting of the Study Club
with Mrs. L. A. Hoke.
Mr. Abbott based his remarks
on thrift, stating that thrift is
the foundation of success in busi
ness, success in society and the
expression of character, that mo
ral character and thrift are close
ly related, also that saving gives
us strength and a feeling of se
curity. Security does not grow on
trees and is not found in boxes
Mr. Abbott closed his remarks
with several very appropriate
poems.
Mrs. P. G'. Ratterree, program
leader, presented Mr. Abbott and
Mrs. Aubrey Mauney. Mrs. Mau
ney had a collection of foreign
money and coins which she ex
hibited and told about their ex
periences In foreign exchanges
while abroad last summer.
During the business meeting,
the following were appointed t<?
serve on the book committee for
the coming year: Mrs. J. H. Pat
terson, Mrs. M. H. Biser and Mrs.
H. C. Mayes. The telephone com
mittee for the next three months
are: Mrs. Hunter Nelsler, Mrs.
H. C. Mayes and Mrs. J. R. Davis.

decoration and the hostess served,
a salad course after the bridge
games. Colas were served during
the progressions.
When scores were tallied, it
was revealed Mr. and Mrs. Drace
Peeler had been the most success
ful players for the evening,

During the business session, the

Mary Ann Beam, treasurer.
Plans were formulated for the
informal dance to be given Satur
day night, August 29 in the Wo
man's Club building.

Wednesday At Weir Home
The nome of Mrs. W. T. Weir
was the scene of a delightful oc
casion Wednesday morning when
Mrs. Weir, Mrs. Ellerbe, Mrs. Dai<
racott and Mrs. Carl Davidson
received at a perfectly planned
Coca Cola party.
Guests were greeted on the
porch by Mrs. Carl Davidson and
inside the door "by Mrs. Ellerbe
and Mrs. Weir. The mantel was
centered with an Immense ar
rangement of pink gladioli, white
gypsophilia, and pom poms. Simi
j 1? arrangements graced the oc
i casional tables. ?
Mrs. J. G. Eiarracott directed
callers to the dining room where
the appointed table was overlaid
wil l a handsome hand made lace
cloth. Two silver candelabras
with a silver epergtie in the
center of each held a stately ar
rangement of lavender gladioli
with yellow gypsophilia. Yellow
tapers burned in the holders. A
beautiful silver tray in the center
was filled with assorted sand
wiches. Silver trays of cheese bis
cults and chicken salad sandwich
es were on one end of the table.
Completing the table appoint
ments was a tray of green and
yellow candied lemon slices. The
buffet was centered with a dis
play of matching flowers and a
tall yellow taper in the hurricane
lamp. Plates and napkins were
given out by Mrs, Paul Fry of
Albemarle and Mrs. Aubrey Mau
ney.
Mixed summer flowers were
used throughout the home and on
the porches where tables were
placed for refreshments. Each
was centered with a small vase
of mixed flowers.
Receiving in the dining room
were Mrs. Marriott Phifer and
Mrs. Howard Jackson. Mr*. Au
brey Clay was at the door leading
into the hall where Mrs. Jimmic
Mercer and Miss Nancy Nickels
served Coca Colas.

At the comparison of tallies it
was found Mrs. Jay Patterson and
Mrs. Hal Plonk were the top
score winners.

Met With Mrs. Ormand
Mrs, Hugh Ormand was hostess
Tuesday alternoon to members of
the Tuesday Bridge Club and

The social event was held at
the Country Club where summer

Of Singer Sewing Machine
Mrs. Kattle Stepps gave a de
monstration of the Singer4 Sewing
machine at the Woman's Club
Tuesday night.
A large and enthusiastic group
of ladies watched as she demon*
strated the many uses of the ma
chine and how to do any stitch
asked for. The use of the many
attachments and how easy it Is
to embroidery and give the tailor
ed look to your sewing, was also
demonstrated. ?
Miss Virginia Cole won the
door prize, a blind henuner.
Miss Carlyle Ware has return
ed from a month's stay at her
summer home at Bon Clarken.
