Phone 438-J QUESTION: I'm a tobacco far mer and 1 want to Know some thing aliout nematodes- and how they affect mo. ANSWER; Nematodes are tiny worm-like creatures. Most forms are so smali you cannot see them. It is barely possible to sei> a ma ture female of some species. We have many types of ' nematodes in North Carolina soils. Some are harmless to tobacco while others are parasites and live by sticking juices from the plant roots. This is what causes the plant to be come diseased. We have two im portant groups of nematodes that affect tobacco: ? 1 ? root knot ne matodes and < 2 > meadow nema todes. These pests feed and re produce in the roots of. a wide variety of plants and live from year to year in the soil and decay 'iiip roots-. When you grow tobacco and other susceptible el-ops con tinously' in infested soil, the no malof'.- population increases un til it is no longer piofitable to grow these crops. QUESTION: Have agricultural scientists developed a tobacco that is resistant to nematodes? ' A NSW Kit: No. While some va rieties of tobacco in commercial use may withstand nematode at tacks somewhat better than. oth ers, we don't have highly rosis tant varieties yet. Experiment Station plant breeders are striv ing to develop nematode . rosis-* tant varieties and to add this re jsistance to varieties resistant to ] other diseases such as black 'shrink and the h.irter j;i I wills,' CITY OF KINGS MOUNTAIN Operating Statement For July RECEIPTS 1953 :?M'i Taxes Taxis H*J?
